In general, British working-class towns are grim to look at when you're straight off the train and its immediate surroundings because that is where the majority live and work. National opinion on an area is mostly based off this first impression. The aesthetic correlates with the wealth or export of that area, but take a ride even 10 minutes away from the centre and you'll see the most beautiful landscape and architecture in the country, usually accompanied by a higher class of people. Even in the instance of Burnley; Travel further out and you'll be in a whole other World. My hometown of Wigan is the same. Although nowhere near as run down as other places, you very often see the rich and famous living on the outer edge in places like Up Holland, Appley Bridge, Wrightington and Parbold. And yes, the chip on my shoulder is heavy.

Here are my thoughts on Hooligans, they are either: Old fuckers largely past it living on past glories, and I'm sure embellishing stories Young fuckers (Late teens to very early 20s) full of testosterone and no guidance excited by the thrill of being a bad boy, but only in a group Its all a bit pathetic. I will also state 2 things: 1) Witnessing football violence these days is quite rare, other than generic arguments etc. you get from any large groups having alcohol. In the terms that they describe here - gangs of people chasing each other and beating the crap out of each other? I've never witnessed it since going to footie from the 90s, that is a thing of the past and hooliganism in general is a rarity, in my opinion. 2) There is a benefit to the 'Firms' that isn't touched upon here - Sometimes you'd have got firms going to attack innocents, families etc. but if your team had a good firm they'd protect you, get you out of the way and put themselves in the line of danger, or advise you to avoid certain areas. As I say, its largely a thing of the past and although I fucking hate the police in general, they have got to grips with this sort of thing

Interesting that Danny Dyer mentioned recently on Louis Theroux' postcast, that he regretted doing these hard man types of documentaries, and only took them because he needed a payday to support his wife and kid.

And this shouldn't be the message that is passed down to the younger generation of football fans. These people are the sort of people complaining about the poverty in their communities, but then they're also the ones destroying local businesses and their OWN communities. Madness 🙄 Sorry, rant over! Good video guys. Your bewilderment at this behaviour is how those outside football feels

Prisons in the US have been used by some European countries as the warning, that there is no rehabilitation, once you've done time your career prospects are down the toilet - you end up going back. The UK isn't that far off, there's some very progressive prisons in Scandinavia where they don't take away rights like voting in political elections, so you don't feel totally detached from society. There's help to get you a better job, some don't even lock you down etc. I'm not sure if it works or not. But when you've got someone from a deprived area who wasn't working before, it makes no difference. It probably gives him a better reputation amongst the other - for lack of a better term - degenerates. The Burnley Andy is probably a loser in most settings, but there he's someone. So I wonder if that's why he's quite happy for his son to follow, as it makes him feel like something. He's definitely hiding behind this notion of it's in him and it's what he's meant to do. It's like Everton Andy said, you grow up and realise you were being a bit of a twat.
