Art Update: Cyberia and the Ice Cave

Today we’re gonna discuss designing Cyberia for Cyber Rift, and the decisions that led to the Ice Cave and Elsie’s home.


For the initial demo we wanted to have some way of making the game feel less than a simple point and click, and have some method of problem solving for the player. The special saber that you find in the cave may have more purposes in the future, but for now that will be a little mystery to ponder on.



Admittedly the implementation was fairly simple, but it did add a lot to the experience when it came to being trapped underground. This was the initial layout we designed for the cave, and the implementation was pretty much spot on to how it worked in game.


(In case you're curious, the whole cave being passive aggressive thing was something that was just thought up as we were designing it. But based on some feedback we got from testers we will definitely be doing jokes like that in the future!)


Some of you may have realized that Elsie’s base was definitely inspired by Hoth’s hangar from Star Wars. Since Elsie was on the run, having her take over an old base that was left abandoned seemed like the right move for her character. We wanted to make sure the feel of the base was still cozy even tho it’s mostly metallic on the icy planet of Cyberia, and so her room has a bit more warm colours compared to the rest of the base. We’ll be adding the watchtower properly once we expand the planet in a later update, but for now you can still visit Elsie and maybe find out some information about her past in the Casino update.



Anyways hope you enjoyed this Art Update. Next one will be able the making of all of our designs directly from thumbnails to game and the making of Elsie’s character.
