See you all in the comments,

Love, always ♥️

Heartstopper Season 2 Reaction - Episode 6 "Truth or Dare"

Comments

your beautiful singing is a song called As if we never said goodbye from sunset boulevard x A most beautiful song ❤️

AMI SARKODIE-DANSO

I love how Will Gao was able to bring his personality to the character of Tao. All of these actors are just so perfectly cast, but also had the opportunity to put their own spin to the character. Is Kizzy not the perfect Darcy? ❤️❤️

Brian Sheehan

This one just had me grinning so much

Meladrix

Ï know I am a little late to this conversation but I just wanted to ad that what charlie said to nick there gives me a lot of demisexual vibes!! So I totally get it!!! Sex isn't everything and to reduce sexual desire to hormones (or biology) just doesn't cut it for me. It is a lot more complex than just hormones. Society and the way society places sexual desire, sex and romance above all else also plays a role in the way we interprate and give meaning to or feelings and how we react to them, this includes sexual desires too. And some, like me, just don't experience it at all. That that line doesn't ring true for a lot of people just shows again, how much importance is placed on sex and the compulsory sexuality of our society! I would highly recommend to read "Ace. What Asexuality reveals about desire, society and the meaning of sex" by Angela Chen (which was also displayed prominently in the truham school library in EP3 I think). I am just halfway through and it already changed my world view.

Nicky Van den Bosch

that is what actually annoyed me the most about Harry's "apology". It wasn't directed at Charlie, the person it should have been directed to in the first place

Nicky Van den Bosch

In season one, during Charlie’s birthday party at the bowling alley/arcade, Issac is reading Radio Silence ☺️ I love that scene because at one point, Nick asks him what he is reading and he tells him what it’s about while Elle and Tao are talking about Tao telling Charlie about Nick’s date with Imogen. Also, one of the books Issac has in his stack at the book store and you can see it in his bed later is Loveless. I love that he found that book even when he is still trying to find out why he feels the way he feels. I know how I felt when I read it, I’d love to see his reaction to reading it too. ❤️

Laurie Barber

That was Nick's choice. The way he kept his arms crossed he was making it very clear there would be no hugs tonight. His dad hadn't earned them.

Steve Teeter

I still feel like it's important to understand that urgency is your urgency... not theirs. yes it definitely rings true for a lot of gay men but certainly not all. it certainly didnt ring true for me.

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Fair point, I should have used a qualifier, “…antithetical to many teenage boys’ hormones.” My clumsy phrasing doesn’t change the significance of that urgency of desire though. It’s what gave me the courage to face down society’s stigma and come out. I suspect the same holds true for more than a few gay men. It’s one aspect that I believe Red, White & Royal Blue got right.

Mark Edwards

I guess for me what your saying brings up the following, Mark: yes from reading the novels we know that Nick and Charlie indeed end up having a sexual relationship... however, just because that's how you felt at that age it doesn't mean that's how they feel. Not every boy is sex-crazed. And saying that POV is antithetical to teenage boy hormones is suggesting that Ace/Aro teenage boys don't exist which simply isn't true. So I think it's important to understand the difference between our own experiences and how we would have reacted and projecting that onto others. What I think is incredibly important is Alice is trying to normalise that not everyone is ready for/interested in a sexual relationship. It doesn't make it any less real.

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Totally.

Graham & Ruth May

That part is even better in the show than in the comics, in my opinion. I liked it there, but here it just makes me melt!

Kt B

Agreed!

Kt B

When Charlie pointed the way to their room and Nick swiveled around to a perpendicular hallway and teased, “are you sure we aren’t meant to be going this way?” I just melted!

Kt B

I also love the moment where Nick and Charlie sneak off next to the vending machine with the intention of making out, but then start talking instead because they feel the emotional urgency of connecting that way. Precious time must be spent on checking in with each other and confessing their interconnectedness. To me, it marks a turning point in how their emotional intimacy informs and deepens their physical intimacy, as we see in later episodes.

Kt B

Also, did anyone else notice that when Harry asked for the opportunity to apologize to Nick and Charlie, he directed his apology at Nick? He figured out that Nick gave Charlie the hickey at the Eiffel Tower, and it clicked for him that all of the homophobic comments he made to Nick about Charlie were personally hurtful to Nick, too. Harry was really hoping that this gesture was going to mend their estranged friendship, and it didn't occur to him that central to making amends with Nick was acknowledging Charlie's humanity. Harry continues to chase redemption in Nick's eyes while continuing to misunderstand him utterly. Good for Isaac for unlocking a piece of Harry's conscience; he's still got such a long way to go.

Kt B

It wasn't until this viewing of this episode that I really saw the hurt in Nick's eyes when his father told him to keep up the rugby. He held up David as an example as someone who successfully used rugby to win girls, and that pierces Nick. Maybe it's the comparison with his brother, or just the heteronormative pressure, or maybe it's that his dad is running away too quickly to let Nick tell him he's in a relationship, but not without stopping first to push him toward girls. Regardless, it's the most painful moment in the conversation for Nick, and of the various ways his dad was being shitty, this took me by surprise.

Kt B

I understand a lot of people felt like that line didn't ring true to them. All I can say is that when you're newly in love with someone and new to love in general, you feel like you'd move mountains for that person. I think it's common for people, particularly young people, to make blanket statements or promises like this while they're bonding. I dated three separate people who said that they were so in love with me that if I didn't want children, then they didn't want children, either. It turns out that, over time, it became a deal-breaker for all of them. I am convinced each one meant it at the time, but they had to live life to really understand what that sacrifice meant, and once they had, they knew it wasn't feasible to give up something so important to them. I think the same is true for Charlie here. I am not convinced that if Nick didn't ever want to that Charlie would be ok with that over the long term, but he certainly believes it in the moment. In fact, I think that if Nick didn't ever want to, that Charlie would start thinking that he was undesirable, unlovable, and worthless, as I predict that Charlie would warp a lack of sexual interest into a form of rejection as his mental health devolved. However, IN THAT MOMENT, I believe he sincerely meant that, no matter the sacrifice, Charlie would do whatever it took to make Nick happy, and if that meant climbing the Alps to pick a bouquet of wildflowers or abnegating his libido in perpetuity, he would believe he could do it. Does that make sense?

Kt B

Loved this entire reaction (was truly beautiful to watch this with you!), but I specifically had to comment on how accurate the singing Happy Birthday bit was -- I am dying haha!!

Em

Beautiful reaction as usual. Yes, I love so many aspects of the episode. But—this is probably borderline heretical—I have difficulty believing the "If you didn't ever want to then I wouldn't either" scene. And before you jump on me, I know it's in the book but I had the same reaction. The POV is antithetical to teenage boy hormones. I had only girls to kiss at that age and I was still sex-crazed. If I had found a boy willing to kiss me back, let's just say Oh My!

Mark Edwards

I feel the same way you do every episode is better than the previous which seems mind blowing. Because every episode is absolutely amazing

Jennifer Williamson

I love the lift upside down and spin into a piggyback of Charlie on Nick's back in the corridor - I remember thinking in the books how did he do that, there's no way Kit can do that - and he did! Perfectly replicated

Dionne Lakey

Also David gets hugs from his dad but Nick gets handshakes or a pat on the arm.

Dionne Lakey

Yes! I love these little details. Also love how they've kept Charlie stealing Nick's hoodys. I hope we get the birthday scene 😁

Kay

Oh, and… I freaked out when I saw the Heartstopper books on the shelf at the bookshop. These characters are literally in those books and it blew my mind 💜 imagine if Isaac started reading those lol

Kim Engel

Great perspective. Thanks

Diane Furlong

Strong possibilities there. If David is Gay that would probably explain his aggressive/maybe jealous behavior towards Nick and Charlie.

Diane Furlong

The “recharging” moment is also one of my absolute favorites from the comics, so I literally burst into tears when I saw it in the episode. It was just beautifully done

Charlie

I think David was old enough when his parents were separating to really be affected by it and want to gain his father’s attention and affection. He is always seeking his dad’s approval with everything he does. Nick, on the other hand, was much younger, so he’s mostly influenced by the time he spent with his mother.

Charlie

That's good, it sounds like you'll have a good balance between work and play/editing 😊

Audrey Gunn

From what show 😜

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Yeppppppp this is definitely the one that broke me... and from here on out it only gets worse...

Jackie-Ross Lavender

It was good. very cool company! And takes up little to no brain power which meant I was able to go from work to the gym and then still come home and edit!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Btw, how did your first day at the new job go?

Audrey Gunn

I knew this would be the episode to break you, that's why we all warned you about it 🥰 I have to say that I think this episode is my favourite of the season followed closely by the next one where we do get the speech from Charlie and it is worth the wait and I think, perfectly placed.

Audrey Gunn

It was a mistake trying to watch this at work, I'm getting too emotional right now!

James Sinn

As If We Never Said Goodbye

Muchi Shaw

I am continually impressed, right from the beginning of season 1 at just how beautiful Joe is. There were some thoughtless comments early on and they were so very wrong. He has the most beautiful, expressive eyes.

Dennis Verner

I can confirm it’s the start of this season breaking me too. I cry progressively more and more for the next 2 episodes 🤣 I think i would want to teach drama because i want want to encourage and support all the little theatre kids like me!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

As someone who was very late to realise I'm Ace (mid 30s); this episode was the start of all the thing that broke me this season. I wish something like this was around when I was a teenager. Other than that, we need more teachers like this! So so so so important. You would definitely smash it out of the park as a teacher. But the most important questions what would you teach and to whom?

Jess Thompson

But truly I worked with Trevor project for a few years and Vanessa Williams is just a huge talent. That would make me jealous. Hubby is from Cos Cob. Though he's adopted and his skin color wasn't exactly Aryan from Darien. Lol. We live on the Ridgefield area now

Trey Cummins

grew up in Westport but with British parents (hence mum). so jealous that you got to see the original cast of Into the Woods that was one of my favorite musicals growing up. I saw Vanessa Williams who was fab but not the same as Bernadette.

Rosie Dickinson

Did you notice the Eiffel tower and Louvre they are wearing the outfits from the book cover. Such attention to consistency and detail.

Trey Cummins

Spot on. James and Isaac broke my heart. I cannot imagine how emotionally devastating being aro/ace must be to a kid just discovering themselves and no in to guide and the world pushing it in you. How isolating. Sorry Stephan isn't a Dad. That's a sperm donor I have one of those as well. I'm just lucky I cut that out of my life by age 9 it's far less painful. Though I'm still friends with almost all his later children whom he ignored almost as much

Trey Cummins

I love a good crier and completely agree with your post with one caveat. I'm not sure Stephan favors David. He doesnt even know where he goes to uni. He's truly absentee in their lives. I think David is just still emotionally immature enough to care and keep fighting for Daddy's attention. Hmm maybe David is gay... You know how bitchy we can be trying to get a Daddy's attention. Lol. Jk 🤣

Trey Cummins

Hello. Fairfield County right here right now. Though I'm a transplant here my husband was born and raised Connecticut Yankee. Saw Annie and Gypsy missed follies(damn) but also got her in Into the Woods, Song and Dance, and Sunday in the Park with George. The best though was a Jerry Herman variation on Jerry's Girls for Broadway Cares/EFA. She reperformed her entire Mack and Mabel as well as some others. Rosie, I hope you and your "Mum" ( how British) have a fantastic time.

Trey Cummins

Sitting here at 1:30am all teary eyed, watching this beautiful episode of this beautiful show. I'm with you Jackie, this one really got me.

Ryan O'Neill

I recognized the song from “Sunset Boulevard” even though I’ve never seen the show; if you are at all a musical theatre fan, it’s a song you couldn’t avoid if you wanted to. This is a terrific episode, though frankly they’re all pretty terrific this season. To me the season builds and builds with every episode, certainly from a dramatic perspective, not to mention the strength of the acting. I think Alice has made terrific choices in what, from the comic to use practically verbatim and what to add or change. And I understand there are places that are improvised, such as the lines between Charlie and Nick, while Nick is carrying Charlie back to the hotel room. All of those choices are pretty much perfect.

Lane Wright

Not an excuse but I can understand older parents/ grandparents from my childhood (1950s, 60s) because it’s a whole generational thing. It doesn’t make it right but a little easier to swallow. Heartstopper is set in the present so theoretically Nick’s Dad would be maybe 50 years old or younger. He should be well aware. What breaks my heart is his blatant affection for David and his indifference towards Nick. Mr. Ajayi speaks volumes every time he says Hmmm throughout this series! I’m with you, Jackie, the Happy Birthday song makes me anxious. Beautiful reaction Jackie. Thank You! I cry at movies often. The movie version of “Ghost” got me big time. Being a big Patrick Swayze fan didn’t help. Heck, I sobbed at ET back in the day. I left the theater with red, puffy eyes. My sister who was with me did not shed a single tear.

Diane Furlong

Good morning, this is a nice little treat to find at 5:30AM here in NY!

Diane Furlong

Couldn’t agree more 🫶🏽

Frances

I was pretty sure that this episode in particular would give you all the feels! I loved your reaction and the „recharging-moment“ made me tear up too…🥹 I was also a little disappointed that Charlie didn’t give his iconic speech towards Harry like he did in the book. But I was very happy that they shifted this whole monologue into the next episode and it was very well placed in my opinion!

Frances

Just a little Easter egg for you, but on the bus at the end, Charlie is wearing Nick's jumper from the cinema in S1 ep 7😊. Another beautiful reaction video, thank you for sharing your journey with this season with us. ❤️ Heartstopper did a number on me when I first watched it, Mr Farouks story is so relatable for me

Kay

I grew up in CT and have seen her 4 times on Broadway (Annie get your gun, Gypsy, Follies, and a R&H concert) but thought I would never get to see her again now that I live in London. Mum and I are so excited.

Rosie Dickinson

I didn't realise the first time I watched this episode but the scene with Isaac and James mirrors the scene with Nick and Charlie. sat on the floor, discussing their crushes, kiss and then one runs away while the other is sat with their knees up looking crushed. Except Nick ran because of outside forces (Harry) and Isaac ran because of internal doubts. I felt so much for James in that moment. It must have taken so much courage to have that conversation and kiss Isaac and then he leaves. The actor playing James was so good you could just feel it. Isaac he did what he had to and Tobie played it beautifully but just heart breaking all around. Nick’s dad is an ass. He has a girlfriend who lives with him and is remodelling his flat and she still has not met his son. Like just what an absolute dick.

Rosie Dickinson

Oh you're absolutely making me green with envy . I just adore her work and her. The woman almost singlehandedly has kept equity fights aids alive and thriving in the US. So this is a gay icon who truly deserves her status . Plus dear God. The voice

Trey Cummins

Anytime Bernadette is performing I get tickets so I am going with my mum in September. The theatre kids I grew up with created a religion around her and she is just fantastic in everything.

Rosie Dickinson

Sounds marvelous. I was honored to have seen idina and Kristen originate but have truly never been disappointed by the casting ever

Trey Cummins

As we have discovered - we are very much the same!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Nicole will be amazing I don't doubt and Rachel will be a revelation as she always is. I saw Rachel in Wicked also the first time she was in the West End alongside Louise Dearman (who then went on to be the only actress to play both Glinda and Elphaba). they were a tour de force!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Music is what makes me cry and the people doing the score on heartstopper all deserve raises. Its truly one of the best I've ever seen. But the cinematography and art direction are also incredible. Its truly a work of art to experience

Trey Cummins

Honestly. Nicole could do it justice vocally and I do adore her. That said. I've seen Rachel Tucker play elphaba on Broadway. My twelfth visit my husband's first. Lol. Wasn't she also in come from away. She will blow out the sound system

Trey Cummins

Singing and crying is fine with me. One of the things I value most about your reactions and the main reason why I joined your Patreon after watching Heartstopper season 1 on YouTube with you, is your emotional honesty. You have a lovely voice, speaking and singing, by the way. 🥰 Apart from the truth or dare scene, which is truly wonderful, there are lots of short, telling moments that I love in this episode: Nick and Charlie seeing two guys holding hands and then looking at each other and lacing their hands together in public is one that stands out for me. And now I need tissues…😭🙃

Graham & Ruth May

Nicole Scherzinger which has causes quite the controversy but I adore her voice and think she's going to be fabulous. Rachel Tucker is also serving as alternate Norma at every Monday performance so needless to say I will need to see them both. Yes, it was supposed to be just a 2 night spectacular to celebrate Sondheim after his passing but it was so wildly popular they decided to have a proper run. I will definitely be seeing!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Omg. Who is playing Norma? I'm obsessed. Saw it with Patti in Nyc and Betty Buckley on Touand Glenn close in LA. Do you know what's also coming, You're getting her West End Premiere in September for only 3-4 months Bernadette and Lia Salonga are doing a Sondheim Honors Evening. You've gotta go Berna is 75 and won't be performing much after this. She is amazing. Will change your life

Trey Cummins

I knew you'd be the one to get the reference. i've been getting very excited about the upcoming revival here in London!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Dear God Norma. It's from Sunset Boulevard. The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways. .... The camera will start turning. I was going to bed but now I have to watch episode 6 first. Lol.

Trey Cummins

I know this was watched over two weeks ago, but I still have the urge to give hugs to all of us that cry over these eps, like we are watching in real time. The shot of Issac coming back the party with a tear streaming down his face is genius videography, while also being so heart crushing. Most of this ep is pulled right from the graphic novel, which is so lovely and fulfilling (like the recharging scene, and the balcony scenes). But I'm also sooooo glad we are getting Issac's fresh story and all the bg with Darcy and Tara to help fill in the blanks of why she ended up drinking so hard in the novel during the party. I'm also a cryer over film, TV and books/audiobooks.. Started at age 16 and only gotten more intense since 😭😭😭😭

Michael D

One day... hopefully!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

This and 7 are my faves of the season Isaac and Tori steal them both. Though I think the confrontation with Ben is just totally cathartic.

Trey Cummins

Honestly Jackie, I wouldn’t mind at all if you would give us a Patreon singing exclusive 😍😍😍

Frances

This is definitely my favourite episode of the season. Isaac's character development is one of the best improvements this season (and Mr Farouk, obviously), and Tobie knocks it out of the park.
