A difference of F/Z anime with the source material is that Kirei is aware of his messed up nature from the start. But he is just aware, that's it. He doesn't act on it; rather he's been trying to fix this. The anime make it seems like a path of self discovery - which is understandable, otherwise it wouldn't be as interesting I think. There is a hint of this in a earlier episode - Gilgamesh asks him to "why don't you just wish for joy?" and he strongly replies "You'd ask me to long for something that blasphemous and sinful?". Kirei is actually putting himself on the spot here, which is why Gilgamesh replies "Why draw a connection between joy and sin?" and Kirei just remains silent.

2022-03-29 03:48:56 +0000 UTCAnother reason why Kirei got so mad at Kiritsugu is because unlike our lovable priest Kiritsugu was always capable of experiencing happiness, enjoying life, loving and being loved and he rejected it in the name of an ideal that Kirei considers dumb, childish and unrealistic. It infuriated Kirei that Kiritsugu willfully gave up on all the wonderful things he (Kirei) could never have. Imagine you've been walking through a desert for days, without any water, you're parched, you're almost dead and suddenly you see a man with plenty of cold, fresh water, but instead of drinking it he just spills it all on the ground for some stupid reason you cannot agree with - wouldn't you be angry? That's how I understand Kirei's reaction and you know it's a strong emotion, because this is probably the first time we see him expressing so much, not jus with his words or actions, but also with his voice and face...
