As I promised, here's the step by step breakdown of my first mermay piece.
The process is a bit different from my usual work because for these illustrations that are more painterly I usually don't do any lineart or follow any specific steps, is literally just me figuring stuff along the way and using the lasso tool a lot. So yeah, there's a lot of painting and rendering for sure and different effects done with different layer modes to add atmosphere. I specified at the bottom of the image whenever I'm using a particular layer mode.
As for the brushes, to be honest I tried to use new ones for this illustration but I always end up coming back to the same hard round brush D: it's stronger than me, but for the kelp I did use some of the foliage brushes from Devin !
