Chappell Roan-'The Giver'

Even though I did a stop/start first listen through, this reaction and breakdown was STILL completely blocked on YouTube, so I’m sharing it here EARLY RELEASE for all of my $5 and $10 members.  This was such a fun song!

I’m super bummed it was blocked, but I’m excited that I can share it here with you all here. It seems SNL is locking their performances down for reactors pretty hard.

Oh well! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. xoxoxo

Tim you may be able to get this live on YT fairly soon. The Giver was registered with ASCAP last week, so it can now collect royalties and such on play. Which means that YT's demonetization for you will put that cash in Chappell's pocket now. I'd say wait until the song gets dropped onto streaming and give it a shot.

Jevon Kasitch

I think the bears in the background are supposed to be like the Country Bear Jamboree from Disney? Honestly I feel like the entire set was a play off of that. Such a midwest thing to do lmao (said by a fellow midwesterner)

Lexie Crawford

She's literally mommy

Ah here are the design credits. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GbkPuDdWAAAZ7Yg?format=jpg&name=large https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GbkPuDdWUAE2Vv1?format=jpg&name=large It includes all band members names and contacts. This is another aspect of Chappell in her generosity to those she has in her support crew. She actively acknowledges and promotes them with her very very large reach and voice on social media.

Jevon Kasitch

Bah, still not embedding links here correctly. :/ Just copy paste and they work though.

Jevon Kasitch

Tim you were commenting on her looks for the videos. First is Pink Pony, 2nd Giver. She usually puts out credit post to her Insta telling where she sourced her outfit, wigs, makeup etc from soon after performances. Often giving a massive bump to the individual crafts people who did them. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GbjaDBuXEAE8EzV?format=jpg&name=large https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Gbfy0IzaYAEOBjC?format=jpg&name=large

Jevon Kasitch

I'd be all for a special area. But I'd say that should be up to you if you feel she is important enough to you and the channel to break her out as you have Renn. But I'll vote yes.

Jevon Kasitch

I certainly would love to be here. And personally if it was a Tuesday that would fit my life schedule perfectly. But that will be what it will be. I assume this listening party might be when you do one of her concerts in full? And a sampling of some of the odds and ends from the past. I can easily give you some solid suggestions in both areas if you like.

Jevon Kasitch

I have a background in psychology and sociology and there is a lot of debate around the very question you ask Tim. The basis lies in when a tribe names itself or is bestowed a name it subtly also changes how members of the group perceive themselves. They become more unified, they work to support and protect that identity which also gives a feeling of acceptance and belonging. It makes them more apt to reflexively defend the 'leader'. In musical terms it applies to fanbases firming up under an identity. Now this always happened but back in the 60's when it was Beatles vs Beach Boys or in the 80's Prince vs Jackson it mostly lead to spirited debate and polite disagreement. Now with the internet it can become a shooting war of insults and drags on the other tribe. It can be quite off putting and not a great feel to see yourself as part of such groups sometimes. It so very complicated

Jevon Kasitch

Do we need to create a separate chat just for Chappell Roan fans here? Lmk what you think.

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

Chappell listening party soon! Thanks for joining up. I’m so excited to deep dive into her music with you all as well as other artists.

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

If you like I can supply some strong suggestions.

Jevon Kasitch

Thanks for being here! More exclusive stuff coming soon! Chapell Roan listening party sometime next week! I’ll let you know soon.

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

Oh wow!

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

I so appreciate this message! So much info here, thanks for this. And I really appreciate your support. I’m going to have a live streaming Chappell Roan listening party soon. I’d love to have you there. Stay tuned!

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

That’s interesting, I wonder if having a name is a part of creating the toxicity?

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

I like that idea of going back. Maybe we can pull one up in the listening party on Thursday at 1

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

Yes!!! I agree.

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

You reflect a large part of her fans communities outlook here.

Jevon Kasitch

I plan to feed Tim a number of her older School era works and sound check covers over time after he fleshes out his coverage of Rise and Fall. I hope it will help show how she's developed over the years and be an interesting addition to his channel.

Jevon Kasitch

Some is very blatant which is her style (Casual being a very solid example) but there are a lot of subtle signaling taking place in her hand gestures, use of the giver/taker terms (which for 80% of America listening in the pickup truck as they drive about will just be a catchy hook, not a sexual roll) and her normal wordplay as in the use of Cowgirl to reference that she the prospective date IS a cowgirl country themed, but also the cowgirl sexual position also for that extra thrill punch, as is the line ending in 'wrapped around my fingers' which of course represents how someone who you re attractive can manipulate one into fun, but also literally what she'll be doing with her fingers. (Note the first phrase is almost always around my Finger (singular) but she purposely makes it fingers. Thats the sort of subtly I was alluding to.

Jevon Kasitch

Also, wow, it is nice to start viewing music genre as a tool of expression rather than a box. Country (especially this chosen country era) is such a great choice for a bold, raunchy sexual invitation lol. Keep flipping music genres on their head, Chappell.

passinthru

Tim, I basically joined for your Chappell reactions ngl, and I'm sure I'll dip into other artists, but any Chappell reaction ("What's Up" reaction please???) I'm here on patreon and on YT for the double view lol. You do great work.

passinthru

Ha that song message is considered coded? It felt pretty blatant to me, and I loved that.

passinthru

Yeah, I'm also a fan of avoiding an official name. It doesn't benefit anyone and draws an invisible line in the sand, measuring anyone who likes her music on some fan scale. Hoping she keeps it casual and inclusive.

passinthru

This is something that is very curious and a lot of speculation has been made upon. People are thinking it was struck in prep for the singles immediate launch, to maintain momentum. Which I think is a bit silly, but then who knows.

Jevon Kasitch

The Giver, in the community, is being called 'Dark Femininenon' in response to that songs calling out the problem, and Giver being an active call to 'The Solution'.

Jevon Kasitch

Oh about what Chappell's fans are called. They are not. Chappell has seemingly purposefully avoided anointing a name, nor has one arisen in her fan base. There have been some thinking that this is a conscious choice on her part based on how some of the named fan groups can become a bit toxic in their tribalism (Taylors Swifties, and Gaga's Little Monsters to name two, but Perry's Katicats also) and it leaves a sour feeling on inclusivity with more casual fans. And one thing Chappell is about is a huge tent where everyone who is curious and polite to others regardless of any affiliation/gender/sexuality can be comfortable. So often these named tribes war on each other. (The saga of the Monsters and KatiCats slagging each other is Doctorate worthy of study) and it's not a great look. All artists want their fans to feel special of course, but I (and others) don't think Chappell wants a cult. But basically "Chappell's fans' is what we have now.

Jevon Kasitch

Hello Tim, Well I made it in. So let me run down some of your questions. So far regarding CR2, the 2nd album we've been told that it's going to be a mix of sounds much as Rise & Fall was. The Giver was mentioned at a Country piece, and a "Mid-Tempo Rock piece" was also spoken of. They currently have 7 tracks finished, which include Good Luck Babe, The Subway, and the Giver. Which are all confirmed on it. It's expected to drop in Summer or Fall of '25. Until then we'll probably see a series of Singles dropped to build interest in it just as she hits the festival circuit for the year. It's been assumed the Giver was chosen for this SNL slot because Chappell felt it was an appropriately strong follow up to Good Luck Babe which of course blew up so huge. And by dropping it here in November of '24 it becomes eligible for the CMA's this next year. We expect to see a streaming drop and video release very soon. Perhaps this week. This will include a release to terrestrial radio also to see if traction can be found. Chappell is currently off tour, so there is no set band for her now per se. But Lucy on drums, and the Guitar and Bassist remain. I believe the fiddler here was the violinist from the Tiny Desk concert, but I am not sure on that 100%. The back up singers are used by her on a case by case song by song basis. And they are all female with the exception you noted, but I believe he may be an active drag performer also, which continues to fit her stage esthetic. The SNL studio is an acoustic nightmare. It straight up blows for some reason based in its raw shape and construction. It's very clear that Chappell's people were on the problem and compensated with the band and her mic levels from their side. They also expected the audience participation on Pink Pony Club (Which I STRONGLY suggest you review from the SNL official release https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Il3u_gZy5Z4 ) You will LOVE this performance. It was chosen as a bracket to her first era. She started with PPC as a break from her cursive sound and it was the first 'new Chappell era piece' and she ended with it before moving on to her second era with Giver. You will have as much fun reviewing it as you did this one. Her costuming was as always sourced from top end creators in the drag community. She is wearing a wig in this clip, and it was also used in the Pony clip also, where she portrayed the Bride of Frankenstein (surprising an early gay icon) and it was made by a gentleman who supplies the drag community with work. It's VERY high end. The rest of the costume is her modern take on the Lil Abner Dogpatch look, and was once again custom sourced. The video screens are one of her recent purchases as she's gotten bigger. They are highly versatile LED screens and the can play video and custom animation. If you look closely you can see Guinia pigs in the video along with the bears. This is a nod towards her long time Pig pets who dies earlier this year it is assumed. It's been mentioned that she required a full practice on set before the show and ran it earlier in the day. Much of the sound tuning was done then. The piece was finalized very early on Saturday. With some final nudges and shifts made. Dan her producer was involved in the whole process. She is on his Island records label. And it looks to be one of those musical partnerships that is going to go the distance. Lyrically she of course heavily coded the piece with her sexual outlook, and it's been received by her community with enthusiasm. Once again, her goal of giving LBBQ+ people in rural areas a fully out performer who is an example is a huge part of her Projects goal. And speaking it in a country genre piece was calculated to this end. She did it with her usual mix of direct and subtle lyricism. Using 'Rhinestone Cowgirl" with a double meaning, Giver and Taker being very much used terms in the Lesbian community. The early line that 'Country Boys need a map, but with my eyes closed wrap you around my fingers" speaks for itself. Your enthusiasm for the piece is exactly the sort of response that was wanted by her and her team and it was very enjoyable to see. One thing that I'd be interested to hear from your professional side is how you feel she took her skill set and adapted it to the country genre here. If you saw anything that was her doing something new and experimental. Her use of the Nah Nah Nah's is a tip toward her knowledge of musical history I think. She has performed Beatles pieces in the past. So she is familiar. Since I managed to figure out how to finance joining here, I'll use that as a basis for making my case of a regular Chappell piece by you on a regular basis. Starting with the SNL Pink Pony clip, and then some others that I feel you'll appreciate and perhaps that long form concert analysis. Hope the day is being good to you, and happy to support your project here. I think your goals are quite good, and it's a thing that I support.

Jevon Kasitch

this song is about how women (namely herself) can get a woman to "finish" but a man can't. "i get the job done" "i ain't no country boy quitter"

joined your patreon just to listen to this, happy to be here ❤️

So crazy!!

Tim Welch Vocal Studio

The mix on her SNL performance of Pink Pony Club is great too - the engineers understood the assignment when she gets the entire audience singing along... it was like they just happened to be taping an SNL episode at a Chappell Roan concert.

Jordan Maynard

SNL put the official video private even too... so something is going on. I wonder if this is another one Justin Tranter co-wrote - he has a great interview where he talks about the first time he heard Pink Pony Club as well as his experience co-writing My Kink is Karma and Good Luck, Babe!

Jordan Maynard

This was so much fun! Thanks, Tim! I absolutely adore how excited you get during these reactions! 💖🙋‍♀️
