🚨UNCUT EARLY RELEASE: Chappell Roan-‘Kaleidoscope’

Comments

A little something to amuse. This is Chappell's raw demo of Kaleidoscope. It's her in her bedroom, playing her keyboard and singing. You can even hear the birds outside the house chirping. She does a lot of her demos this way. And those birds are an eternal signal of where in her process she is. Very very early. You can see how close to being final is is already at this point. She makes very few changes from here to the above official release. Just becomes more apt at dropping the emotional payload. It's so nice to be able to see how a performers process works and see it in real ways like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sj6-uTfDTKM

Yes! Reach out when you are ready, I am so proud of my amazing instructor team. Such wonderful people. My schedule is pretty packed, but I do have openings here and there.

I requested this on your YouTube page that I'd found a few weeks ago when I was on a Chappel Roan binge haha and I became a patreon member just so I could see your reaction to it. It's an amazing performance and it gives me goosebumps and I really appreciate you acknowledging my request! You've inspired me to get back into music :) I'm looking into maybe doing maybe music or singing lessons next year (I can't hold a tune but I've heard people say that anyone can sing) if your studio perhaps has any openings for virtual lessons? 😅

It is absolutely destined to be a classic. It's so so good.

I Appreciate your thanks. I feel that artists working in the modern social media leveled world need to gather folks around them that act like antibodies, and who push back against bad or wrong information, try to reflect the artists outlooks as well as possible in their own behavior, and just help build communities that are healthy and supportive.

Thank you for the background information. Really appreciate it 🫶 And omg - that song 😍

Here is Chappell explaining the song along with her Inclusion speach. This is where the Reddit person picked up the fact that woman she was writing about was a songwriter also, but sorta missed the bigger message that I outlined above about it being that they had to choose their own path. Also note that she accompanies herself through the whole inclusion speech with Kaleidoscopes score, playing almost without thinking about it. Using her music to ground her words even more solidly. She's visibly emotional in this performance, and asked the audience to help her sing it. This one is not really review worthy in quality, so just watch it Tim, and enjoy how she performs and reacts. Though I'd love to hear your written impressions in response to this post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VkGM6mhPM4

Okay. Let me add some background information. This piece is unique in a few ways. The first is that Chappell wrote it 100% alone, lyrics and music. On her first album it's the only piece that is a solo creative work. Usually she works with others to tune her song writing, and to build the musical scores. Speaking of which, the piano player is Dan Nigro her friend and producer. The man who is partially responsible for her modern sound, and her partnership with him looks to be one of those that will go the distance. He also produces Olivia Rodrigo, and she and Chappell are close friends. Chappell also provides backing vocals on several of Olivia's songs. Anyhow back to the songs story. Chappell fell in love with one of her closest friends, and bravely told them, and they told her they wanted to think about it, which she agreed was a good idea. While she was waiting to hear what her friend's reply was, Kaleidoscope popped out of her fully formed over a day or so. It was her way of handling the emotions she was feeling while waiting. The friend eventually told her that, no she didn't love Chappell in that way. And the did revert back to friendship. She is still in Chappells life I believe as a friend. Chappell almost always cries or weeps visibly when she does this song in performance. And it clearly takes a bit out of her. Thusly it's not a frequent piece that shows up in her concerts. She's tended to place it after her "Inclusion speech" where she talks about how she wants her shows to be safe places where LGBQ+ people can be themselves. Which tends to make her emotional already, so the further hits from the song sort of blend in. It's also the one piece she does live where she still plays the piano. (Usually an electric keyboard) no other of her current work features her doing that. I heard a different take upon the lines regarding "No one could write a song.." etc. It's one where Chappell likens the word "Song" to mean "Your life path" So the lyric becomes an analog to "No one can live and chart the path of your life but you." Which fits the songs message quite well. As it's about how she is willing to let her friend go however they chose in regards to her, because she knows she cannot dictate it. The piece is a favorite of many of her fan community, and it tends to make many cry openly when done. It was one of the pre-album single releases, but it gained no traction (none of them really did until Good Luck Babe broke through and rose like a rocket) so it's place in her discography is pretty solidly formed up. It's her most emotional piece to date period. Full stop. It's also my personal favorite of her work. The mike (and her costuming and styling) was probably chosen to represent a 1920's esthetic which seems to be a period that Chappell has a fondness for. I'm sure it's a modern mike, but what brand exactly is unknown to me. It was probably chosen for its plastic halo around it to suggest the vintage mike looks. As always your reaction and analysis was excellent and enjoyable to watch. And your point about how you like to see the imperfections because they make the pieces 'more real' is an interesting one with relation to Chappell. It's been noted that she frequently makes subtle shifts in each of her performances of her work, thus delivering a 'unique' performance at each show. If it's conscious or just a reflection of where she is energy and mood wise is unknown. Also she doesn't seem to mind too much when she bobbles things. Remember the tiny desk performance of Red Wine Super nova? Where she actually laughed in the middle of the song. She tends to just go with it. She really is a live performer at heart, preferring it over studio work. For the next Chappell reaction I'll suggest The SNL Pink Pony Club performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Il3u_gZy5Z4 There are several aspects of this performance that I think you'll enjoy immensely. And feel it would be well worth your time. She was exceptionly 'On' for this one.
