CHAPPELL ROAN-'Love Me Anyway' Comparing STUDIO vs LIVE

Great idea to check this one out Jevon. Definitely a charming song from an earlier version of Chappell, yet still very Chappell!

CHAPPELL ROAN-'Love Me Anyway' Comparing STUDIO vs LIVE

Comments

Oh. I forgot to mention. The Lyric Video was probably 100% made by Chappell alone in her bedroom with her iPhone. She's always loved craft projects and that clip is 100% the sort of stuff that she seems to like. And the Guinea pigs at the end were her pets that often appeared in her TikTok clips of the time.

Howdy Tim, I'll, as always, fill in some of your questions and comments. The first is why did she choose to resurface this song for Warsaw, and the start of her new Visions tour? It's hard to say, because one interesting thing about Warsaw was that the setlist featured EVERY ONE of her active catalog songs + the Barracuda cover. Every single thing from her most recent era. So it might have been as simple as she dumped the toy box out onto the stage and shook everything out of it. She had no fixed stage time it seemed so why not do it all? The second thing is that I think she wants to set a slightly new tone for the tour then the Midwestern Princess tours, and Love Me Anyway does sound very different then many of the other pieces. So it adds variety. But honestly only she knows. Love Me Anyway also holds a position in her catalog that is 'special' It, Pink Pony Club, and California were all written when she was under Atlantic, and Atlantic held rights to them. When Island signed her, they negotiate a deal that either bought the rights out totally, or gave her ownership majority of them with Atlantic holding a token amount. This was mostly done for Pony and California, but LMA came along for the ride. So she is free to use it and enjoyed the great majority of the revenue that comes from it. That is very different than her School Days compositions also done under Atlantic, which she does not own at all, and can only benefit Atlantic if she does them. Not that she is super interested in doing so. She has stated that she doesn't connect with them any longer and they are from someone 'very different'. So they are consigned to the past. Though once or twice she has done one in concert when the spirit moved her to send some respect to her younger self. But I digress. LMA may well have been included because it's hers. And that is probably reason enough. The piece is popular with her fan base. Especially the older members of it that predated the release of CR1. One needs to remember that this was written 5 years ago now, when Chappell was 20 or 21. AND it was the first piece where she started to move away from the dark cursive style that she had been doing that would truly be broken after Pink Pony Club was done. It's light and happy and bouncy. BUT it also deals with an aspect of her and her sexuality. It's about a boy who remained dedicated to her even as her interior voices were saying this was not right, and the difficulties she had navigating that. He was clearly a friend, and what society said she should want, but... it felt not right. So this piece also marks the first time that she started to sing about her personal journey. It's patient zero. Pink Pony gets the attention and full understanding that it marked her true awakening, but LMA is a subtle tentative voice that proceeded it touching on her core aspects. Many of her older fans recognize that. And hold love for the piece. Many of her newer fans have never heard it. But as you could see the crowd in Warsaw clearly knew it and sung along. And its appearance was met by a lot of happiness (And Surprise) by many in the fan groups and received well. What I just wrote, also speaks to your comment on how the song is 'young' in orientation. And yup I agree. Because she was still young, and was very subtle about the personal aspects in it. Note she specifically Has the lyric "Sometimes I forget, wasn't always this way It's hard to admit, I was the one to blame " Which most feel speaks to her starting to acknowledge that the focus of her sexuality had shifted and she'd 'changed' from the culturally instilled path she'd been following. And takes the blame for being confusing to the guy in the song with her very mixed messages. So like her current very raunchy lyrics that still slide in without waves, she was doing the same with this part of herself and self view back then. Subtle. Her vocals on it have clearly evolved, and you pointed that out. But it's also a unique song in the things she shows off in her skills also. A lot of fine careful work out in the open like a close in magicians skill. Not seen but the trick amazes. Solid entry, and if it ends up on YT I'll get my comments up there later. Nice work Tim.
