'Choke'-THE WARNING EXTENDED ANALYSIS

Comments

I saw it, also interesting that Choque is Spanish for drowning.

Pau said that Dany has more power at all frequencies than the other two and has more range than either. Ale sings low harmony and Pau does high harmonies when all three are singing. Ale also does some falsetto harmonies on a couple of songs. It's interesting to note that any two of can do harmony giving a lot of combinations.

Thanks for the great walk through! Regarding backing tracks, Pau controls them with her feet. She has a pedal on her left to start, and a pedal to the right of her right bass pedal to stop. She also has a second hi hat on the right. Pau rarely uses tracks. I've only noticed them for hi hats on one song. She does a lot of ghost notes on her bass drum, especially on songs in 7/8 time like Evolve. She plays with or without triggers, depending on the show. Ale plays a 5 string bass of course, and Dany sometimes uses a splitter. Combine it all, and they get amazing, full sound, even without any tracks!

Love the all female kick ass rockers 🤘🤘🤘

Beth Reilly-Cadwell

They do use limited tracks in ableton live and Dany uses a Kemper profiler. She'll have the guitar going straight through one channel and in the other channel the guitar will go an octave up or down and with a little delay and sometimes added distortion. If there are technical problems they drive on and sound almost as good without the tracks.

I really appreciate that feedback.

I can never find it when I want it, but there's at least one interview where Pau explains "Choke" is about being deep into a mental health problem and needing to just sink to the bottom before one can begin to recover. Or something along those lines.

Mark Burlingame

Their sound engineer is named Lalo. He has been with the band for years, working on getting their sound perfect. I have seen them seven times, five after Lalo was hired. I have only seem him unhappy once.

Roy Wall

Something you talked about on how the bass and kick drum are on the same frequency but can hear them separately is something I love about The Warning and their production. Another artist that has that same sound is Stryper on their "No More Hell To Pay" album(2013). Thank you for a great reaction.

Terry Lowther

I am super jealous. I can't travel like that anymore, but to be at those big shows will be absolutely amazing. I'm betting that Beto Ramos (Pau's drum teacher and great artist) will be there to help Lalo out on the sound. The CDMX concerts are stadium quality. Enjoy and please report back!

Dave Johnston

In the bridge Pau is singing the low harmonies. Ale comes in with a high harmony on "breathe in, breathe out. " As you said, she's not at the mic when the low harmonies are sung, only for the "breathe in, breathe out" where you hear the high harmonies. That's all before Ale comes in for her solo part

Thontor

I think now's a good time to hear them sing in their native tongue. I would suggest Martirio at the Pepsi Center (https://youtu.be/CzHC55B0vxY?si=YIoYcSNNe0sBgebJ). There's also a music video with english lyrics translated that you can use if that interests you. (https://youtu.be/5FI8VDCIndc?si=8GkpgAx_wFY82wZH)

Loved the analysis! Their sound engineer is Lalo Plaza and he is a genius. I have been to many live performances for different bands but The Warning’s sound quality is unsurpassed. You can hear everything clearly and the bass/bottom end is thunderous yet doesn’t overpower everything else. You will love it when you get to see them live. It is definitely a “must see/hear” event.

Please Hell You Call A Dream (Pepsi Center) Danny's Vocals are incredible... Also the Song "23" (Teatro Metropolitan) Paulina Vocals shine so Much.

First of all, let me say that as a quite new Patron, I really enjoy the system you have here of doing a more complex breakdown on Patreon after a first time runthrough on YouTube. It really helps those of us who want to understand what we are hearing better. I don't know too much about The Warning except that I have liked every single thing that I have heard and that I have thought, more than once, that rock is in good hands with them. This is going to be a very good place to get a more complete understanding of them and their music.

If you want more Ale singing, this one is a little older than some other recordings out there but has the best audio quality. Ale only ever sings lead to avoid canceling a show when Dany needs to take it easy. So they worked up two songs off of Queen of the Murder Scene for her to take lead as needed. It's this one, Red Hands Never Fade, and another called Hunter. https://youtu.be/ADxbB5cEp9o?si=B6yE9ITTnvmMmP-_

I should mention that if you really prefer to do a live version of Automatic Sun, then the best one is probably Live From The Vevo Studios https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvwXAMZOdOM .But in my opinion, this is one of the very few times where the studio version of a TW song is (so far) better than any live version.

james chisholm

the next song? As a vocal coach? Hell You Call a dream from the Pepsi Center

Torsten Vaquet

as I know her guitar sound comes from the Kemper Pedalboard ... her guitar amp is the simplest of all Orange Amps ... They have a genius for the live sound on the mixer ..... The most of the Stems are synced with the click track that Pau controls

Torsten Vaquet

Hi Tim. Dany's huge guitar sound is somewhat complex. She uses a programable Kemper Profiler for her amp/pedal board which allows her to double her guitar at points in the song using a harmonizer. And, of course, they do use tracks as well that are controlled by Pau through Ableton Live. Lalo Plaza, their sound engineer, is well known as the top sound guy in Mexico (they poached him from a band that went on haitus, and never let him go), but I believe this concert was mixed by Pau's drum mentor Beto Ramos, whose company Groovy Chaos produced the OMV for the next song I think you should do by them: Automatic Sun. Automatic Sun shows a completely unique and different side of Dany's voice, and I'd love to hear your analysis. There are multiple videos, but I prefer the OMV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDFH9AcPpyA - studio sound over a festival video. Have fun!

I'm borrowing a line, to say that Ale's solo in this song is "the most anticipated 10 seconds in music!" Unless required, she is perfectly happy singing low harmonies and gorgeous falsettos! Everything they do is "just what the song requires!"

Warren Schulze

I really like how you're getting into The Warning. You're reactions are great. I only found them myself a few months ago and I'm totally hooked. I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing your reaction to the song Revenant live from the Teatro Metropolitan. Pau comes out from behind the drums to take the lead vocal and Dany and Ale's backing harmonies make it into an incredibly beautiful song. You have been warned! ;)

Will IAm

Regarding the lyrics, according to Pau the song is to provide a safe space for those experiencing overwhelming emotions but want to deal with it on their own, rather than just seeking sympathy. Several of their songs encourage emotional resilience. Part of the secret to their big sound is how Dany programs her Kemper footboard with different distortions and effects like delay and octave shift sent through a second channel to fatten the sound and give the impression of a second guitar. She also varies the effects depending on whether she is playing a verse, chorus, or solo. Ale does both low harmonies and also high falsettos depending on the song. She reportedly has perfect pitch, but as an introvert, does not like to sing lead unless she has to. Happy you are jumping down The Warning rabbit hole! 😎

Andrew Auerbach

Lalo, their sound-tec, is a God-tier sound engineer. He's been with them since forever.

Hans Reese

Yes, Tom, Ale is normally taking care of the very low end harmonies. This is why sometimes her voice is a bit lost with all the low ends and some listeners will say that they see her signing but don't hear her clearly. To me that can be a quality that all voice complement each other so much that they form an ensemble, rather than just a bunch of voices layered together. As for the backing track, they use some. All the backing tracks are however entirely played by the band members. Paulina control those tracks by using midi pedals connected to a laptop sitting by her drum kit which runs the track via the Ableton software. Keep the reactions coming. I have been enjoying your analysis.

Jdelo

Just close your eyes and imagine their harmonies and vocal stabs as being played on a keyboard or another guitar. Yes they make themselves much bigger with their voices

PhilT (Yeni)

Counting their harmonies, their "vocal instrument", they are a 4 piece.

Kevin Gray

Yes, Tom, they sound that big live. Pretty amazing to me. I have seen them more than a dozen times. Actually typing this at the Houston airport on my way to see them four more times Mexico in the next couple weeks. Never traveled like this for a band before in 40+ years of concert going. They do a very nice job of making all three of their instruments be heard. It’s a huge sound, but not one of those indistinguishable walls of sound. That requires all three of them to be outstanding technicians at their instruments. Their lyrics and storytelling are outstanding as well. So glad that you have fallen down the rabbit hole with the rest of us. I had said since I first heard them that Pau is some combination of the energy of Animal and the groove of Mick Fleetwood.
