Kim Junsu - 'Another Me' (Dorian Gray Musical) Eng sub & KRN/Rom

Comments

Oh man, you're in for a wild ride. Junsu is a vocal powerhouse and the OG K-Pop idol that is in the legendary status, known for his unique voice and tone. Unfortunately TVXQ/DBSK (동방신기 "Dong-Bang-Shin-Ki"), the original K-Pop group with five members, whose fame was unrivalled back in their days, had a bad fallout due to the "slavery contract" (very long story but in short basically the company that created the group TVXQ took most of the revenue, working them like dogs to an unsafe degree with lack of sleep, etc. so part of the members filed a lawsuit against the company & exited the contract) then it split into 2 groups with the two of the members remaining with the company as TVXQ, and the other, including Junsu, becoming a separate group called JYJ. Then JYJ also had a fallout due to a scandal with one of the members, so the remaining two members of JYJ now work as solo artists (Jae-Joong and Junsu). At the time of the original TVXQ fallout - the company (SM entertainment) "banned" the three members who exited (JYJ) from appearing in any sort of national television (think like CBS, NBC, etc. in US) by pressuring the channels (they still deny that this happened, but we know this ain't true lol) as SM used to be the "Big 3" in the K-Pop industry alongside YG and JYP (until BigHit/HYBE came into the picture with BTS) and had A LOT of influence on these TV channels due to their huge lineup of successful artists. So this meant that the three members had to find another way to connect with the fans (other than tours/concerts) so Junsu turned to the world of Musical, back in 2010. Now, that the time, it was often very frowned upon for "idols" to enter the scene, as it was almost considered a "sacred" area of "true musical artists" only — so obviously Junsu and his fans had a very high anxiety about him joining the musical industry. Again, long story short, his entrance into the scene is now often referred to as a "beginning of a new era" in Korean musical. He opened a HUGE door to a new wave of fans and artists — regardless of their origins, often now consisting of former and/or current K-Pop idols, actors, etc. Now, after 15 years of being a musical artist, and 21 years as a K-Pop idol, he is STILL up there when people mention "most talented vocalist in Korea". I would highly recommend his live performances as the recordings don't do justice to his skills. I will recommend a few clips below: 1. "Love in the Ice" — originally a TVXQ song, widely adored by the fans, remixed for Junsu's solo concert as a beautiful acoustic version. This clip is one of my absolute favourites despite the low quality of audio being a "famcam": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyW9CqSvQcU 2. Cover of Amazarashi's "The reason I wanted to Die" — a personal favourite song, long before Junsu covered it, showcases his unique voice well in my opinion. Originally a Japanese song, translated to Korean for this performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd65l451KI4 3. "Loving you keeps me alive" from the musical "Dracula" — a definite fan-favourite, in this performance you can really hear his unique singing tone (husky yet clean & delicate, while also being powerful): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkwnQ7ZqFvY 4. "Golden von den Sternen (Golden Star)" from the musical "Mozart" — Mozart! was Junsu's debut musical back in 2010, and he often tells the story on this song being the reason for him entering the musical world. Originally sung by Baroness von Waldstätten in the musical, Junsu mentioned that the lyrics overlapped with his situation at the time and had really moved him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YsShzPq72Y 5. Junsu's Overtone Compilation — Junsu is also known for his overtone, especially when singing musical numbers. In the video, the clips are from his performances from the Korean production of musical "Mozart!". The final note where he drags it out — you can hear the high overtone with the base note he is singing. Thought it might be an interesting clip for you to watch/break down as a vocal coach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Sh4It22fjg I also just have to add my love of the songs of Dorian Gray the musical — it was an original Korean production, all songs composed by the talented Music Director Moon-Jeong Kim. Another beautiful song from this musical is the trio number "Life of Joy" with amazing harmony from the three main cast members: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ygs4QM-uANg My favourite number from the musical is actually the curtain call song — Requiem — sung by the whole ensemble. Unfortunately, there is no official clip/audio available for this song but you can watch the fan-recorded version of the curtain call here, very emotional!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCWZezdmbKk Apologies for super long comment, I just had to gush out due to my love for Junsu. Came here because of BTS and ended up writing an essay about Junsu, haha! Would love to see more Junsu reactions (and BTS!) in the future :)

I didn't realize until this reaction that Kim Junsu was now doing theater. He was a member of TVXQ, one of the earliest K-pop boy bands, which debuted in 2003. They had a bad breakup due to 3 of the members (including Junsu) suing their entertainment agency due to unfair contracts. I didn't realize Junsu is now in theater so it was a great reintroduction.
