Test VR animation ! [8K/VR/360°]

I suggest a test with VR animation! I know that not many people have the chance to own a VR headset, nonetheless, I wanted to try the experience. As you've probably noticed, the animation has an 8K resolution, and that's why it's only a 15-second sequence.

Why render in 8K?

Well, after several tests, it seems to be the minimum to have a sharp image from all angles once in the headset.

Rendering these 15 seconds took me about 150 hours, so it seems quite unlikely that I'll be able to render several minutes of VR animation someday. I think that if the feedback is good, I'll try to create VR loops after the release of each project. These loops will be Patreon rewards. Speaking of Patreon rewards, the tier rework is imminent. I'll talk about it soon 😉

How to watch the video?

• Firstly, you need a VR headset that you can connect to your PC (or a headset that allows you to upload the video into its memory, but I can't help you with that).

• Since it's a 360-degree video, you also need software that supports this type of video. I don't think you'll be able to play the video from the Google Drive player, and even if it did work, the quality would be terrible. So download the video and put it on an SSD if possible to avoid jerky (the file is very large).

• For my part, I have an Oculus Quest 2 connected via AirLink to my PC. From there, I turn on SteamVR. On Steam, there are video players for 360 videos, at least one of which is well-known but paid, and I don't own it. I tried two free software that are not too bad: Mermaid VR and GizmoVR video Player. I personally preferred the latter, GizmoVR, especially because the loop playback works well, unlike the first, where its function remained a mystery to me. So I'll continue the explanation for that one.

• Once in the application, you just need to go and get the downloaded file on your computer and start playback. There are two small settings to change for good playback; I provide you a screenshot of the settings I chose

Honestly, I wouldn't be able to say why. You're not the first person to have a video jerky even with an SSD and a good graphics card. I think there might be a setting somewhere that limits the bandwidth to the VR headset, and since the bandwidth required for 8K is colossal, that might be the issue. Sorry for that 😓 What VR headset do you have? In any case, I don't think it's the SSD, i have a low-end, not very performant SSD, and it works well. As suggested by BleuRaven, I will also provide 4K versions in addition to the 8K. The resolution will be less sharp, but it can be a solution for less powerful machines that can't handle 8K ^^

The video is very jerky, I guess my ssd is just too slow?
