I think there are a lot of people who approach investing like they're on the casino floor, and jump right in to things they simply do not understand, like they're throwing a bunch of money down at the craps table without understanding anything about the rules of that game. There's so many people getting in on extremely risky investments, like shorting stocks, buying puts and calls or straddles, buying on margin, buying meme stocks and now crypto, and they don't really understand what they're doing. There's an old gambling addage that is quoted at the beginning of the movie Rounders: "If you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then YOU are the sucker." That applies to all these people investing in this manner without knowing what the hell they're doing. They spend a couple hours on r/wallstreetbets or whatever and think they're ready to make a million dollars overnight. When you look at a memecoin, if you can't see the angle being played, then you're the mark and should just steer clear. Crypto is just too easy for scammers to use to grift money from rubes. Unless you really are an expert in it and are very familiar with all the ways its created and who is involved in creating it, you should avoid it. There's a lot of very smart people with no scruples who have zero issues fleecing the masses of their life savings and disappearing into the night.

I worked on most of the episodes of Zendaya’s last Disney series “KC Undercover”. Glad to see her doing so well in movies.

J Hay

Jeff said “Money Horse” again! Last time he realized that he meant “Cash Cow” :)

J Hay

New drinking game idea. Drink everytime Jeff says "That's right".

MardtSmyth

My guess for Dave's #1 movie of the year is either Didi, Mickey 17 or Wicked.

Stranger2Reality

Or that you’re grateful it’s finally coming to an end.

Peter Tribe

“It’s weird because you love other hawk things” 😂

Wags

I for one thoroughly enjoyed Hawkeye and am incensed that we aren't getting a season tuah.

Shane Driscoll

{pounding table} "$CAST COIN! $CAST COIN! $CAST COIN!"

I’m always kind of bugged when people bring up Megalopolis’ budget vs box office returns. Yes it was a colossal bomb but plenty of great movies have been commercial failures, and plenty of garbage movies have been financial knockouts. I definitely didn’t think that Megalopolis was good, but I also didn’t think it was a complete disaster - I’m really glad that I saw it in a theater, and it kept me engaged throughout, it was at least interesting in a way that many movies aren’t. I think this way of evaluating a film whether it was financially successful is very myopic and encourages viewing art as a statistics-based endeavor like sports, which it shouldn’t be. I also don’t think Coppola *expected* to make his money back. He’s an old man who liquidated some of his substantial assets to make a lifelong passion project before he died. I don’t think he thought it would be a blockbuster, I think he just wanted to make it. It didn’t ruin him, he still has a ton of money. On that level I can’t really consider it a “loser.”

I don't mind the unique "politeness reminders" that play before films; if Tom Cruise wants to yell at me to turn off my phone, I'll gladly take it. What does drive me nuts is this new trend of playing behind the scene featurettes right before the movie I'm about to see for the first time. I went to see Godzilla Minus One a couple of months ago and there was a 15 minute special effects documentary playing before it! It spoiled Godzilla's appearance and numerous scenes. Fortunately, the doc was in Japanese, a language I don't understand, so I was able to just look down at my phone for the duration.

I almost always watch the films before listening to the episodes. Anything Rebel Moon related are notable exceptions.

PoorFrisco

Dave can’t resist the sweet, sweet downloads. See all the reviews of Rebel Moon 😁

David Grimm

Show immediately goes off the rails when Devindra is not there. It took less than a minute. xD

Many of the crew of Shogun also worked on our independent VR film up here in Vancouver, including the costume design team, which won an Emmy. Everybody was so pleased with that show's success. I would be happy to set up an interview if David wanted. It is my dream for our VR film to be seen by the hosts of my favourite C-tier film podcast.

David Slater

I think Jeff is totally right – the scammy circular reasoning behind all these meme coins is "this is going to be huge because people are going to want to buy in because they think it's going to be huge! except YOU get to buy in first before all these other suckers!" And of course, the buyers then realize they were the suckers all along, because the team behind the coin were already planning to dump it all along.

Sacha Greif

I always scream thank you when I’m having a heart attack.

David Esposito

Even I agreed with most of what that Hollywood Reporter article was saying, the writing of the article itself was so smug and amused with itself that I had a hard time listening to it 😖

Rob

I have never heard Jeff sound so soft and reassuring in the face of stressors. Which says a lot about Jeff’s relationship to both his wife and his podcast companions

Kess Broekman-Dattner

Also, quick question: why are you reviewing Kraven the Hunter?

PoorFrisco

The War of the Rohirrim is coming out soon and should absolutely be discussed in a main review over Kraven the Hunter ( actually there’s got to be like 10 current movies more deserving than Kraven the Hunter).

PoorFrisco

What Dave is leaving out re: the Lohan comeback is that she has had amazing plastic surgery that has reversed the bad plastic surgery she had. THAT is the comeback.

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Given that the Tuah girl is especially popular in the MAGA-sphere, I WILL be uncharitable because they likely voted for Trump. I give zero f’s about that demo and their consequences.

Reynaldo K. Cruz

I just need to say that the use of “hawk tuah” in the context she said it makes no sense. That is clearly the sound of hocking a loogie and no one wants a loogie spit on their thing!

Tyler Chauhan

“Hawked tua close to the sun” 👏

Ted Lauck

Gambling is highly regulated so you have atleast a chance to win. Rug pulls isn't like Gambling

Cardassian Vexillology

We don’t need to extrapolate the hawk coin saga and somehow link it to people not achieving their dreams - people got caught up in a craze and made some really stupid financial decisions. You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.

Steven Kennick

Never heard Dave crack up like that.

J.S.

Well Dave, I guess you could say, we’re launching this bitcoin in the form… … of a limerick!

Hello everyone, I wanted to share something that was bothering me. Daft Punks movie Interstella 5555 is being rereleased on December 12th for one night in theaters with an HD remake. When I heard about this I was overjoyed as both Daft Punk and Interstella 5555 were a large part of my childhood. I first saw the movie on Toonami and instantly fell in love with the band. Imagine my disappointment when I saw the first HD trailer for the movie. The movie was obviously just upscaled through some shitty AI filter with what looks like no post filter corrections. In some shots characters are missing their eyes, and the soft focus look of the original is completely gone being replaced with harsh jagged lines. If you haven't seen it the main message around the movie is about how corporations take authentic works of art and corrupt them for their own personal gain, it seems like the irony was lost on whoever the hell decided to use the shittiest way to update this movie for a cheap buck. What do you guys think? Do any of you hold a special connection to this movie, if so what are your thoughts on this AI upscaled version?

Felipe Ochoa

If someone is dumb enough to invest in hawk coin, I don’t feel bad for them that they lost. They took a gamble.
