NOTE: The audio for this episode is a bit hot towards the beginning, but should stabilize as things go on. Enjoy!

The Filmcast: After Dark is the bonus show where we talk about a variety of random topics that didn't make it into the main podcast - including your questions and what's going on in our lives.

In this episode, David, Devindra, and Jeff discuss the continuing death of physical media, what to expect at Sundance this year, and whether there should be more sex scenes in movies.

So, in terms of playing discs *at all*, we are now in the closing point. My 40yr old brain cannot comprehend a world where no physical copies even exist.

I’m with Jeff calling out assholes at screenings, etc. If we don’t say anything, we’ll be part of the problem that enables jerks to gain more power, be it at a movie theater or as a President, and all those between these extreme examples.

AF: For myself, I never watch the View, I just signed up on BlueSky, and years ago I occasionally listened to Rogan. Politically, he’s a disaster these days. I like Tarantino and Avary’s podcast, so I might — just maybe — listen to Roger Avary talk about his imprisonment. As for BlueSky, you can “thank” the ridiculously wealthy asshole supreme Elon Musk for causing so many of us to leave Twitter/X. Now, what’s your bubble?

J Hay

Sundance has been programming for new and first time directors . They have also been screening more women directors than the other festivals out there. I’ve always looked at them as trying to find the next big director rather than trying to cater to the industry or box office hits.

That knowing laugh Jeff is talking about is like most of the audience in Milwaukee. People are constantly chuckling at things that are not meant to be funny. It's infuriating.

Mathew

Pulling out the laptop in the cinema is actually so nuts that it wraps right around to being funny. I kind of begrudgingly have to tip my hat to somebody who gives that little attention to what others around them think.

On the topic of the younger generation wanting movies to be more chaste - I think that stems from them being aware of how big of a problem pornography addiction has become. It’s a much bigger issue than most realize, and it’s not openly discussed. This issue can easily be triggered by other forms of visual media, like movies.

Steven Kennick

Except he doesn’t actually. Is that something the girls from The View told you? No wait, let me guess…it’s all the chatter in your BlueSky bubble?

AF

Sorry, Joe Rogan supports and promotes fascism, so I will never listen to him or support anything he does, regardless of who he's interviewing. Some people deserve to be boycotted and he's definitely one of them.

FWIW, the Rogan episode with Tarantino and Roger Avery is the best episode of podcasting of listened to this year. In depth stories of their time at Video Archives, great film analysis, Excellent career advice for aspiring filmmakers (or anybody for that matter), and Roger Avery’s retelling of the manslaughter accident that sent him to jail will leave you utterly heartbroken. Highly, highly, highly recommended no matter your taste for Rogan.

If I had to guess what the craziest sexual movie I can remember seeing in theaters was, I'd probably go with David Cronenberg's Crash from 1996. That movie was rated NC-17 for its sex scenes, and given that it was Cronenberg, well it's pretty out there. There wasn't a big crowd to begin with, but probably half of it walked out during the movie. Great movie though, right up Dave's alley if he hasn't already seen it.

I went to see Beau is Afraid in theaters (it was nearly empty) and some guy came in an hour and 45 minutes into the movie and sat in the row in front of me, and within about 10 minutes pulled out his phone and just started browsing Facebook on it. I could not understand what this guy was doing, as he'd already missed most of the movie. Best I could figure is he was gonna sneak into another movie and had time to kill before it started so he was just looking for a place to sit out of sight. I told him to put his phone away, and thankfully he did without any fuss. But that just stood out to me as very strange. Go sit in the back row if you just want a place to sit and browse your phone.

There haven’t been any new 4K players in many years. LG are dropping out of the 4K game also. The only real choice according to the subreddit is the Panasonic 820 and 900. I just rip my discs and play them on Plex because I don’t have a Dolby Vision compatible display.

April Reid

I’ve also been threatened with violence multiple times asking people to stop talking or stop using their phone. It just isn’t worth it. I can’t imagine risking it in a country with guns.

April Reid

lol “the immortals” Eternals guys it’s “the eternals” yes it’s forgettable blah blah blah but Dave liked it cmon Dave!

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Prince Charles Cinema is a gem.

Bram Welch

Bet he was one of those losers who thought it was a horror movie and not a gothic romance.

BENJAMIN SHULTZ

Me: wow, one of the hosts finally contronted someone interrrupting the screening! one minute later: ohhhhh noooo

Mountain of Conflict

I had a similar situation to Jeff. It was watching Crimson Peak during a daytime screening, there was only a hand full of people in the theater and a few seats down from me were a couple obviously on their first date. The constant chatter lasted about 20 minutes before I turned to them and said "guys, this isn't a fucking café, go somewhere else to chat"... the guy immediately stood up, he was huge and very bulky, he walked over and stood in front of me, stared me down, then turned to the girl and motioned to leave. Problem was the whole situation ruined the experience, I was shaken and sweaty but I'm hope the exchange made him think twice about doing it again.

Dave, you think having Manohla Dargis follow you on social media entitles you to plow through the riches of her Emersonian mind?

Danny C

Sounded kinda like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park.

BENJAMIN SHULTZ

And I also saw The Land Before Time at the Prince Charles cinema in London and I had not seen it in 20years and it really stands up. Daughter loved it. I think taking kids to see classic films at the cinema helps kids to appreciate the cinematic experience.

Simon Columb

Isn't the lack of Blu-ray players because you can still play Blu-rays on 4k players? So we'll upgrade our hardware but our discs still work on 4k players

Simon Columb

Is Jeff seeing movies with Woody Woodpecker?
