2021-05-05 14:14:38 +0000 UTCok well i've already started 🎵neeeerding ouuuut🎶 i've looked up pictures of the full moon, and i guess it had been a while that i hadn't checked out a proper detailed picture of the moon's surface but it is <em>wild.</em> There's craters everywhere, some absolutely massive, it's kind of chilling and awe-inspiring and fucking <em>metal</em>! and it feels like a reminder that the universe is not a nice place necessarily and we are <em>nothing</em>. then i went on a quest to figure out what species the moth might be, and i pretty much dropped it when i found out there were no less than 160,000 known species of moths lol!! at first i wondered if it was some sort of hawkmoth? also hella goth, although it's clearly not the famous death's head moth— maybe that would've been a little on the nose lol =D and it might well be a hawkmoth honestly, the diversity is staggering, but i ran into a picture of a garden tiger moth (fr="écaille martre"), and that seems to fit the bill pretty well; they're spotted, fuzzy, and can get up 5 or 6 cm apparently. they're super cute!! i'll also note that tiger moths are seriously badass, they feed from toxic plants like foxglove (fr=digitale), and metabolize the toxins to become toxic to predators themselves, hence the bright "don't eat me or you'll fucking die" spots on their wings. they also produce a sound version for the benefit of bats, it's a Britney Spears cover that goes "don't you know that i'm toxic" =D =D =D (i'm very proud) (but really, they make a rasping noise that bats know to associate with toxicity. also according to one source "If that [the noise] doesn't work [to deter predators] they can exude a drop of bright yellow blood from the thorax". they fucking rule!!!) anyway, nice combination of elements, very atmospheric, i love the sense of darkness and how it's already ambiguous because the moth while associated with night and death and darkness is vulnerable and cute here, so maybe after all, it's just an insect? or if it does carry some of the symbolism, maybe the darkness should be treasured and embraced, not (only) feared. I'm reminded (by my own train of thought rather more than directly by the comic lol) of Starhawk's Dreaming the Dark. what is the french title by the way, did you mention it?
