Unfiltered: Cartooning.

I thought I'd do a little video thinking out loud about cartooning, exclusively for you patrons. I'll probably make this into a series, just thinking out loud on subjects that interest me. What do you think? What would you like me to talk about?

Unfiltered: Cartooning.

Absolutely not. There's plenty of great cartoonists that are not good draftsmen. Look at Charles Schultz, for instance. There's nothing in life or philosophy that can't be communicated within his style, yet he never learned any classical drawing. Would I recommend learning realistic drawing to become a better cartoonist? Absolutely. You can either do like Sergio Aragones, who to my knowledge is not a great draftsman, but is one of the greatest students of drawing. Which means that in addition to having some foundation in classical drawing, understanding anatomy and perspective and such, he deeply studies every thing he draws. From boats to cars to historical knitting to chainmails to whatever... If you see Aragones draw it, it would probably work in real life. Or another route, is like David Mazzuchelli did. He was a supremely gifted realistic artist, with Batman Begins and Daredevil Born Again being the pinnacle of mire realistic 80s superhero art, and then he abandoned that in favour of a graphically simpler and thematically more complex cartoon style. I sort of lean towards the study or realistic and classical art, but without cartooning it means nothing.

Do you think that you need a good understanding of anatomy and realistic/classical drawing skills in order to do cartooning well?

That's good to hear.

Awesome video ,love the series idea ‼️💜
