Brenda [Joe] [Drama]

Every day her routine was the same. Brenda would get up, check the time on her wrist device; shower, put on her make-up and update her social media while having breakfast. She always told herself that the job at the coffee shop was temporary. Just enough to get by for a few months and find her true calling. But the truth is that Brenda's only vocation was Brenda herself. Her parents were the first to realise that she wasn't good at studies and lacked motivation. She only splurged on cosmetics, designer clothes and visiting coffee shops whose prices were inversely proportional to the size of their portions. She didn't even feel sorry when she was invited to leave in an unsubtle way. She would find something, she was sure. Confidence had never been lacking on herself.
Social media presented a world of opportunities for hedonistic people like her, but even that required a few things that she lacked. The first and most obvious, perseverance, and the second... money. She could fool herself about a lot of things, but when your house was a tiny, leaky flat, it was hard to camouflage the reality. It was that lack of goals that threw her straight into that roadside coffee shop. It barely gave her enough to live on and left her very little time for herself. But even with her sad reality, she was able to romanticise it. She liked her uniform, even if they didn't even give her a badge with her own name engraved on it. Just one with the stupid name 'Joe' on it. She didn't even know who she was.
She also consoled herself by telling stories about the customers. Sometimes they were fantasies about truck drivers with secret identities; sometimes she distracted herself by matching people by the number of tables they chose. Sometimes she even tried to imagine herself inside the scene, bumping into some stranger who would rescue her from her bland life. But it all ended in a similar way. Putting on coffees, cleaning tables, reheating cakes. At least she didn't have to make an effort. A couple of well-chosen smiles and an extra tip was assured. Because that's what her whole job was based on, how to make a little extra money just on the basis of her charm.
Unfortunately, what started as a stopgap, ended up becoming a routine. Getting up, showering, breakfast... She stretched her skin in front of the mirror without much enthusiasm and when she did, she saw her partner's face, more wrinkled, with less charm, but the same attitude. Her twenty minutes on the internet were her only consolation. A consolation full of lies, false smiles and stories that she would pull out of her head to tell others. After that, the constants returned, setting coffees, cleaning tables, reheating cakes... She could hear the sound of that damned greasy microwave a kilometre away. Even her patience was wearing thin. Tired of hearing day after day a name that wasn't hers. Making up stories because she lacked her own. Every day more lonely, every day more isolated in a bubble in which her followers were her only contact with other people. With a sense of youth slipping through her fingers, where was her happy ending? She'd been taught to wait, but even her dreams were beginning to take hold.
Her chance, the chance she was waiting for, but not looking for... When would it come? She asked herself that question more times than she should, as the wheel kept turning. There was no desire to continue, only a silent resignation. Slowly she was coming to terms with the fact that this was probably all she had left. Disgusting food, dirty rags and a nameplate that wasn't even hers. At least there was them. Nameless, faceless and through a cold screen, but more real than the people she came across every day. No one could tell her they weren't, because to her they were her everything, her anchor. That to which she clung with the strength of ten thousand seas, so as not to lose control and sink to the bottom.
She owed nothing to anyone and no one owed anything to her, but listening to her phone as she left work made her feel comforted and satisfied. Something that made her smile instantly. "Someday," she whispered as she glanced at her device.
Sometimes wishes are twisted and when they come true they aren't what we thought they would be. That 180-degree turn she had been waiting for came in the form of a swerve. Life was fleeting, ephemeral and hers disappeared like lightning in a dark night. But if Brenda had been known for anything, it was for surviving even death itself. While her device glowed in the road for the arrival of a new notification, a smile was still on her face. The smile of one who was about to be reborn.
