What are Binaural and Isochronic beats?
Added 2021-03-30 23:05:26 +0000 UTCBinaural beats: It's an auditory phenomenon in which two audio tones played at different frequencies and entered separately into the brain (one through the left ear and the other through the right), are perceived as low-frequency pulsations or beats.
Headphones or properly separated stereo speakers are recommended to listen to binaural beats.
Isochronic beats: They are similar to binaural beats in the sense that they can produce a beat in the same range of frequencies. The difference is that they are composed of single pulses of sound at the desired frequency. Thus the beats are made outside the brain so headphones are not required for entrainment to be effective.
These beats influence the brain into different states through the entrainment of brainwaves. This is that our brain has a natural tendency to change its dominant frequency towards the frequency of a dominant external stimulus.
Our brain works in five main frequency ranges:
- Delta 4 Hz or less, Deep dreamless sleep, loss of body awareness
- Theta 4-7 Hz, Dreams, deep meditation, REM sleep
- Alpha 7-13 Hz, Relaxation (while awake), pre-sleep and pre-wake drowsiness
- Beta 13-40 Hz, Active, busy or anxious thinking and active concentration, arousal, cognition
- Gamma 40 Hz or more, Higher mental activity, including perception, problem solving, fear, and consciousness
