Surprised that you didn’t more strongly emphasise the duality of male and female roles in tribal societies. The improved survival and reproductive success of masculine men (more likely to provide resources, protection and outcompete other men) drives women’s attraction to masculinity. Likewise the improved survival and reproductive success of feminine women (stronger social alliances and better child rearing capabilities) drives men’s attraction to feminine women. This isn’t that nuanced and doesn’t explain the entirety of our preferences in modern social contexts, but I thought it would dominate the discussion more. Perhaps it was so obvious that I missed it.
