I always thought Deep Throat (beyond the immediate, the obvious reference) was the informer's codename responsible for publicizing the Watergate scandal in the US. My rusty memory is pulling up the early 90s movie, JFK, and the more recent movie (miniseries?), The Post, which highlights the role major media outlets play in American politics. Not sure if it's mentioned in those movies, but they're the right time period...

Many people are influenced by charisma, body language, confidence, etc. Someone could use gestures that are similar to commanding or instructional/bossy gestures like pointing a finger at someone while telling them what to do, but masked half-way with a friendly-recognized gesture and a smile.
