UPDATE: New Single! Twin Peaks Lo-Fi Chill/Study Beat

"I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen." -Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks S01E07)

Tonight I'll be posting a short video on how I work with samples, specifically how I chopped the Twin Peaks Theme song into the main riff driving the track you're hearing right now. There will also be a little info on reharmonization picking a good sample as a source.

A few days after that, this song will be available on Spotify/Itunes, etc, and I will post a music video for it. It won't be too exciting and will be reminiscent of the endlessly looping "lo-fi chill/study beats" you can find on YouTube, but I'm still trying to make it a bit more watchable.

In case you didn't notice, I have trouble sticking to one style when it comes to songwriting. My next single will likely be acoustic fingerstyle, in which I'll release the tabs and mp3 here to you all. I expect it to be fully complete by Christmas.

After these two videos are posted, I'm going back to songwriting basics with a big lesson on secondary dominant chords, how we can write more interesting progressions with them, and of course where we've heard them before. I'll also clear up the theory aspects that had me confused for a while with Secondary Dominants, but trust me it's easier than it may sound!

A few more words on this track- there is a lot of stuff that is new for me in this one. For starters, the bass never changes- I'm used to working with lots of chords and movement. In this case, the goal was to get a full length track without giving up those lovely two chords (Fmaj7-DmAdd9) and also not become boring. I had to rely a lot on tone, timbre, and dynamics to make the progression sound new and interesting each time around. Also extending the chord in different manners, and at one point removing all but some filtered drums.

The effect is, hopefully, an extended relaxing chilled-out vibey electronic groove that doesn't get monotonous but still keeps your interest. Music is a mood-making device, and I really like the mood that's conveyed in this track. Lo-Fi music in general has a funny psychological effect that I really enjoy, and it's a great balance to the intricate technicalities of prog metal =]
