Pentatonic Possibilities: New Video + PDF + EIGHT Mp3s

Normally, the videos I make have been bouncing around in my head for months if not longer. Rarely does an idea come to me and then I just drop everything to make it. This video is one of those exceptions.

Last week, a question was asked to me here on Patreon by Paolo Alonso . He asked the following. in response to my video on making Bro Country, where I said Pentatonic Minor works great on top of a major chord.

"In a previous video you say never use the minor pentatonic over a major key. Here you do, admitting it is representative of the genre. Can you elaborate on when you improv using the major vs the minor scale?"

Although I can't remember the specific video, I do recall saying that playing pentatonic minor on top of major progressions is the "definition of bad guitar solo". And that statement certainly needs some clarification, so I've made this video to hopefully clear up any pentatonic confusion you may have.

Here's the link to the video- It's currently unlisted so only you can see it, but it will go public tomorrow

More importantly, this video may introduce you to a whole new world of pentatonic possibilites. The two scales are amazing, especially for guitarists because of their convenient shapes, and it is worth learning all the different places you can use them.

I've attached a PDF just for you all here, as well as long versions of each musical example. They are basically just loops that go on for about 5 minutes, so they'll get bland after a while but they are good clean slates over which you can experiment. The funk track actually has an arrangement/structure so to speak, so that one should be a bit more fun.

I'm behind schedule (who would have guessed?!) with this week's Patreon-only video as this one took far more work than I expected. I still have the worst habit of thinking every video I make will only take a few days, then realizing too late that I've dug myself in a hole. In this instance, making 6 new music tracks (2 were semi-recycled), filming the solos, and rendering them all out properly and synching them with solos took a lot of time.

One thing I'm very happy with though is the fact that I know I saved several days of work by switching to a home studio set up. This video required a LOT of going back and forth between my audio and video PCs, and having everything in one spot where I can work until the late hours (like now!) has been very relieving.

Regardless, the next student club video for you all will conclude this bout of song structure lessons. We're going to look at traditional music forms and how we need to modify them to make them helpful and relevent. We will also try to write a secondary section of music off an existing chord progression.

The chord progression we will be working with is featured in THIS youtube video -it's the D Minor progression and is one of the tracks attached below. You may want to challenge yourself and try on your own to write a secondary section to compliment this progression, then compare your efforts to the ones I'll display in the next video.

Just to note- this video is currently unlisted, but will be public tomorrow morning. Hope you enjoy it and see you soon!

This video is AMAZING! Definitely the best I've seen in your channel and you have great stuff. It really did introduce me to a whole new world of pentatonic possibilites. Thanks Jake, I'm glad to be supporting you.

Great information-packed video.
