Thanks for the explanation, one of these days Wil and Charlie should pick a match that's viewable online to do a watch-along wherein they explain what on Earth is happening. Trying to cold open on an AFL match armed only with Google to sort out the rules is daunting. Also, content!

But yes I get confused between prelims and semis all the time (I grew up overseas) - for me semifinal is the one before the final! π

There's actually no quarterfinal in AFL - there's week 1: elimination/qualifying finals (1v4, 2v3, 5v8, 6v7), then week 2: semi-finals (winner 5v8 against loser 1v4, winner 6v7 against loser 2v3), then week 3: preliminary finals (last 4) and then week 4: grand final. I find it easier to think about in terms of which week you're in rather than the name :-) as for why - well AFL is a bit special, but QF / SF / F is used across a lot of sports in Aus and UK I think, and in US depending on sport. E.g. Tennis everywhere uses that terminology.

Typical Aussie use of language mate. We also tend to shy away from the use of βyesβ and βnoβ, preferring βmaybeβ and βIβll think about itβ or βmaybe notβ. We have a reputation for being really straight with people, which we except if you ever read a transcript of one of our conversations. Go the Catters!

So, I just finished listening to 2 Guys 1 Cup and I have questions for the Aussies. Why do you call so many matches "final"? As I understand it the Bulldogs have just won a QUARTERfinal, their next match is a SEMIfinal. You can't just call every playoff match a final. It's very confusing for a Canadian Liverpool supporter who already has no idea what AFL is about. That said, I hope Wil's side do well in the final they have before the final.
