Masterclass: Paperwork and Permissions

So, we've found a great site... let's get digging!

Well, it's not quite that simple. There's a complex web of red tape to navigate through first, as we encounter newts, nesting birds, building sub-committees and mountains of paperwork. Fortunately, as Helen Geake recently explained on Patreon, nobody knows this stuff better than Jim Mower.

A very capable archaeologist in his own right, Jim's Time Team journey began many years ago as a digger – you might remember him as the hapless prisoner in the 'Jailhouse Rocks' reconstruction (S10E13). But his skills were equally treasured off-screen as he demonstrated a clear knack for resolving the various challenges, both in organising a responsible excavation and producing great television.

Tim catches up with Jim to share their unrivalled experience and insights, taking us through several different site scenarios in our very first Patreon Masterclass.

I believe Wessex Archaeology has all the site reports available.

I would like to read some of the academic papers that were prepared from the shows. Are those available digitally? How can I find these ?

fascinating

turned me into a newt! i got better. no joke when you have to get half the crew to comb through grassland before starting a new trench!

Loved hearing all about the mechanics needed to drive a dig forward. This is where the business side of Time Team meets the business side. Be great to hear more about the actual financing and business structure needed to make Time Team a success.

yay test pits & the community & local knowledge you dig up along with, good points by Jim. I haven't gone looking for any of the grey reports yet but I second Elizabeth's question if there are some that aren't online or are in some obscure location. Maybe we could have the links put somewhere on the Patreon page?

Hopefully they do a dig near James May's new pub.

Great and essential explanation. ............ But what about proximity to a pub ?

Patrick Keefe

Fascinating to learn more about what goes on just to plan for one dig.

David Boon

Very interesting. Two things struck me: this is all essential but very time-consuming (and therefore expensive), and, secondly, the discussion brings out the point that it is by having an excellent reputation for a thorough approach that TT gains access to some of the most interesting and sensitive sites.

Philip Stack

Fascinating to learn of everything that went on which we rarely even glimpsed in the original finished programmes.

Paperwork and permissions - and archaeologists nightmare. Pleased to see that Time Team are explaining how we have to go about these things to make sure we can actually do a dig. But can't wait to hear more.

Where can we find the grey reports for Time Team series outside of 2003 to 2013 (the Wessex archive here: https://www.wessexarch.co.uk/our-work/time-team)?
