Site Wrestle (Producers): Medieval Village

In our second Site Wrestle from the Producers' perspective, we introduce a brand new site contender...

Again, on paper it looks great – an ancient village with references in both the Domesday Book and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, linked to a famous historic king, possibly home to Anglo-Saxon church remains, and with ties to the early European colonists of North America.

What's more, there's a thriving village community today who care deeply about uncovering its past. There's an opportunity to drawn upon the experiences of Time Team's Dig Village project in Dunster. Surely, it's the ideal contender! But how practical would it be for Time Team to take on in reality?

Tim and Jim share revealing insights into the merits of Time Team's traditional 'three day' format that we're so often asked about. Far from simply a 'restriction', it created a clear structure to build the narrative upon, helped maintain focus, and crucially set the scope to manage the logistics and budget for each episode.

But what do you think about this site? As always, please let us know in the comments below.

Totally understand where he's coming from, but it's also the kind of scenario where you could really get creative in how to manage filming so many areas on a short time frame. Yes it would be difficult, but the bigger question I would like to hear his perspective on: is the potential worth the unusual difficulty, and if it's something everybody else wants to try apart from the filming crew, how can Time Team improve on or evolve from the format that people are used to while still feeling like a Time Team episode? It may be that it's not feasible, but I would love to hear how he would address those questions.

So much work and so many decisions that go into a location!
