Site Wrestle (Career in Ruins): Neolithic Long Barrow

You may be aware of the fantastic (and fantastically-named) archaeology podcast, 'Career in Ruins', hosted by Lawrence Shaw and Derek Pitman. (If not, you should really check it out!) You might also have seen the duo pop up as occasional guests on our Teatime sessions.

Lawrence is Lead Historic Environment Advisor for Forestry England, whilst Derek is Deputy Head of Bournemouth University's prestigious Department of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Their professional lives give them access to a wonderful range of archaeological sites, and one of these is the Neolithic long barrow that Time Team is considering. Now, for the first time, Lawrence and Derek get the opportunity to present the site in their own words...

I agree. If it is this important, it needs to be researched and scheduled to be protected. If TT can help with that, great! But protected either way.

Larissa Spiker

Seems it needs to be worked on and information gathered then protected 🤔 .

I also love the idea of this site, but I do agree with a number of the other commentators about the importance of this site meaning there has to be a guarantee that it gets the time & team (sorry) necessary to do it justice. I wonder if there's a possibility of partnering with Bournemouth to both share the costs for the three days and for them to be able to continue the work beyond that should the site require it?

Christopher Samuel

I voted but I honestly don’t mind. I would love to see what is found at any site. Just live the programme!

Anne Collinson

If you had a six-part series, you'd definitely do this. Not sure - with the risk of little being in there - it's good for the first dig back.

Richard Moss

Your mention of a guest host has given me a cunning idea (sorry, Baldrick.) At some point, enlist as guest host Pilomena Cunk. That would certainly add a twist to the script writing!

Eggs Ackley

Yes, I agree it’s a “must do” site, and I also agree it’s not a season opener. I picture it as a nice weather, bigger budget episode where you have some good experts ready, perhaps some guy in an old hat who loves flint, and maybe a short little Sir something or other as a guest host? If it turns into something amazing, put it in your back pocket and close the season run with it!

I have to say while fascinating, I believe it's too much to go at as a first or second new Time Team dig. By it's nature a barrow is a huge monument, to try and do it any justice with limited manpower in a short program time span I think is unrealistic. While it could certainly answer some questions that excite archaeologist, what the environment was like at time of construction, method of construction, types of tools used, etc., how much would that interest expectant viewers? I do think this is an exciting site, that it should definitely be on Time Team's short list. However I don't think it should be too near the top. Not until there are more supporters, the Team has gotten their legs under them, and a thorough assessment including geophysics has been done. Then, considering such a large site, if some help from local enthusiasts and perhaps some of the students from Bournemouth or another interested university could be added for additional labor, it could be an epic dig.

Robert Boudreau

Yes, this is changing my mind. It could be great, and I think it's a goer

Richard Vine

This wouldn't be my first choice but I love the enthusiasm of the guests (Tim too!). I really hope there's something there if we start digging.

John Matthew IV

To dig an unexplored site would be exciting & there would be great anticipation to see what would be discovered, even if it turns out to be nothing at least we would know. It isn’t my first choice though I would certainly like to see an investigation done.

I agree with the comments in the video it's a great site but I think it's a bit of a hill to climb. It needs a lot of work on this one. In my opinion this is a site for a later date. Either a combined or more extensive dig is required. Is the technology we have able to cover such a dig and as well as the amount of people needed to do so.

The possibility of another Silbury Hill embarrassment needs to be kept in mind. Could be another Sutton Hill...could be Al Capone’s vault. (I.e. empty!)
