Post Dig Analysis: Saxons on the Edge (S15E08)

If anyone knows anything about archaeology in Leicestershire it's Peter Liddle MBE. That's exactly why Time Team called upon his expertise to help us find evidence of Anglo-Saxon settlement in the county. Peter suggested Stonton Wyville – and his suggestion delivered! Now, Dani Wootton has caught up with Peter again to find out why he selected this particular site, and how it fits within the wider context of the region.

Peter is chair of the Leicestershire Fieldworkers. Find out more about their excellent work and upcoming lectures here: https://leicsfieldworkers.co.uk/

On the other hand-Wouldn't a midden be only found near activity?

Kathryn Schauf

I can see that higher numbers of items in an area indicates human activity but couldn't they be evidence of a midden? A midden wouldn't be close to housing by and large.

Keith Jackson

This does highlight the importance of community involvement, and is , I think, Time Team's greatest legacy.

A very interesting talk. Well done to all the volunteers.

David Boon

I would immediately sign up too, but I'm in Germany and as far as I know there is no possibility to get involved in archaeology as normal citizens like in Great Britain.

I love the videos you all are creating. It is a pleasure each morning I awake to a new video in my mailbox. If I wasn't out here in the U.S., I'd sign-up to be a field walker immediately!

Of course, in this particular case we cannot vouch for the historic accuracy of the scene. Archaeologists debate whether Volkswagen hubcaps made decent shields.

Hi Morgan, the cartoon featured in the programme was a Victor Ambrus original! As well as creating his wonderfully evocative reconstructions, Victor was also an excellent cartoonist, occasionally offering a more irreverent take on a scene.

Such an interesting conversation hearing about the work that Peter has done in Leicestershire and to hear all about field walking it sounds wonderful !

Sarah Holloway

These segments greatly enrich the original show with background and a depth of understanding. Many thanks for spending the time involved in getting them on the web.

Thank you for such an interesting presentation. I really learn a great deal like this. My only regret is that I dont live nearer Leicestershire.

Robert Wise 1 minute ago About that bone needle … the camera footage shows the needle being uncovered, and it appears that the needle was point upwards in the interior of the posthole, in the area that might have been occupied by the post before it rotted away. I’m wondering how the needle came to be in that position and location. Was it inserted in a hole or crack in the bottom of the post before the post was planted in the earth? Was it set in the hole beside the post and soil packed back around it? And…whatever the cause, wasn’t that a pretty significant symbolic action by whoever left the needle?

Robert Wise

The tip on fieldwalking was useful. Compared to the original it is dry - it used to great to see people having fun together - but I know you are working under covid limitations. The picture of the Vikings in a boat was cartoonish - not like the beautiful pictures you used to have.

Thank you so very much for this very interesting presentation. And a huge thanks to all of you, from the fieldworkers to Peter, et. al. And I am looking forward to more! Cheers, Fern W in Minnesota, USA.
