Finding Eanswythe (New upload)

Back by popular demand, it's... Eanswythe!

Apologies to everyone who has experienced issues with Vimeo integration on various devices. As a result – and while this is being investigated by Patreon's developers – we're trialling other platform options. We hope you enjoy this incredible story from a very colourful period of Early English history.

In this fascinating discussion with Dr Andrew Richardson of Canterbury Archaeological Trust, Dani Wootton gets the lowdown on an incredible 1400-year old detective story, involving an early Anglo-Saxon saint and member of the Kentish royal family.

St Eanswythe was the grand-daughter of King Ethelbert of Kent and aunt of the two princes murdered at Eastry (as featured in the Time Team episode S13E06).  For years it was believed that her mortal remains resided in the local church in Folkestone, Kent which is dedicated to her.

Then, in the 1880s an ancient casket containing a pile of bones was discovered in a hidden alcove in the church. Could these possibly be the mortal remains of the early English princess?

Andrew explains how modern scientific techniques – including carbon dating, isotope analysis and DNA analysis – are helping to shed light on the discovery, helping to settle the mystery once and for all.

Fascinating!

It would be great to find another platform. YouTube is becoming highly politicized and is paying their clients less and less. I'd much prefer that reasonable money goes to the creator and YouTube stops thinking they have the right to think for everyone else.

YouTube works much better than Vimeo! Thank you

If there is a way of getting a copy of that book, I would gladly buy one. The whole project and its background and outcome sounds a fascinating story.

It would be fantastic if there should be enough of her skull left to do a facial reconstruction!

Thanks for reposting via YouTube. Know the quality isn't as good as Vimeo but at least I could watch it this time. Great to see the story develop like this.

So interesting to have relics from a saint all Christians (RC/CoE/GO) venerate.

Fantastic episode. I love hearing all the work that happens after the digs are over. It wraps the story up nicely.

Fascinating! So often when you do the work on “relics” they turn out to not match the legend. This was a real “deep dive” into history and I would love to have the book. Could it possibly be offered in the Time Team Store?

Kathryn Sherlock

So fascinating, and thank you for posting! I must admit that I am very interested in the Anglo-Saxon period so will be getting the book and I do so hope that we can hear more about the results of any DNA analysis.

This was a lovely episode to watch on Easter morning. Reality is not always kind to history and folklore, this time it was confirmation. May she Rest In Peace.
