Test Pits: A Quick Guide

So, we're returning this weekend with more Time Team Classics, and we're delighted that Matt Williams will be joining Dani for this Sunday's official episode commentary.

The first episode (which we'll be providing full details of very soon) has a big focus on community archaeology and test pitting. But what exactly are test pits?

In this Patreon exclusive, Matt and Dani give us a very quick guide. You might want to watch this again after the episode has aired, but we hope you enjoy this little taster in the meantime.

Remember: Test pits should only ever be carried out under the guidance of a professional archaeologist, to ensure that the process is carried out and recorded correctly!

Test Pits: A Quick Guide

I enjoy watching all the series and I’m intrigued by how easily your experts are able to date finds. My hometown in the US, Pensacola, Florida, is the oldest attempted settlement in America. It failed because of an ill-timed hurricane but there are written records that establish the colony, the location and what happened to the survivors. The local university has been doing the archaeology and the research since someone first found some broken pieces of pottery while digging some test pits in the 1980’s. However, they couldn’t definitively say these were related to the original colony settled in 1561 until they found part of the anchor of one of the ships that was sunk in the harbor. They didn’t find that until the 2000’s. I’ve always wondered how Time Team can do it in three days but it took these archeologists more than 20 years.

Congrats lady, you deserve the very best I've seen you work so hard and I can tell you love it. So you go girl
