Word of the Day #1: Ground-truthing

Sunday brings another Time Team Classic, and for this week’s official commentary, Dani Wootton is joined by environmental archaeologist, Naomi Sewpaul.

An out-take from their conversation has inspired a brand new, impromptu feature: ‘Word of the Day’.

Ok, it won’t be every day, but we’ll be adding interesting archaeological words and phrases to our virtual ‘Time Team Dictionary’ as and when they crop up in discussion.

Today’s archaeologists have some incredible technology at their fingertips, from ground penetrating radar to LiDAR, helping to locate features with pinpoint precision. So, is there really any point in digging?

Introducing our inaugural Word of the Day: ‘Ground-truthing’.

Have you learnt any relevant terminology recently? Let us know in the comments below...

Really love these segments - feel like I am part of this thing you’re doing …way over here in New Zealand. Thanks so much.

"ground-truthing"... very Anglo-Saxon :-)

David Leffman

As with any process which applies the scientific method, it is important to confirm experimentally whether a hypothesis is correct or not. Ground-truthing is simply confirming or refuting the hypotheses which the various geophysical techniques propose for a site.

David Hazel

Dani is doing such a fine job of interviewing and presenting these segments. Bravo!
