S22 | Dig Watch: Anglo-Saxon Cemetery: Site Map - 3D model

It's the afternoon of Day Three, and we can't believe how quickly the dig has been whizzing by. But there's still plenty to resolve in the last remaining hours of the day. We have another insightful Site Walkabout on the way (currently uploading), which we cannot wait to share with you.

Some of you have asked to see a plan of the site, so we thought we'd get the ball rolling with an interactive 3D model of the main location. The area here shows the Data Dome and our services tents, with the two main fields at the centre of our investigation.

This aerial photogrammetry scan was taken before any of the trenches went in. We'll provide more context and updated maps with specific locators as the process develops, so please watch this space.

You can access the model on Sketchfab here: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/anglo-saxon-cemetery-norfolk-de2c8808f2354243a16d2c567607dc08

I have a question .. there's a stream there, lined with trees, right? Is there a second stream on the other side of the site? Why do the fields have such funny shapes? Is the depression in the ground due to a body of water that dried up?

Elizabeth Neill

That works! :D I clicked on the image because I was too lazy to read the text.

Eelco Kruidenier

Hi Eelco, sorry to hear that. Have you tried accessing the interactive model on Sketchfab?

Time Team

Great interview! Well done. Solo Gus this season will be quite interesting… I think Mick’s rainbow singlet deserves high marks for sartorial excellence. Cheers

Ross G. Kreamer

Kind of... but not quite! When you're on the ground walking, you get a greater sense of the subtle variation and how that might inform people's use of the landscape.

Time Team

Great model. The landscape is kind of ... flat.

Model works on my old ipad and Samsung tablet as well as laptop & PC. Great stuff, keep it up.

Peter David Brown

Really cool. I got it to work really well on my pc in Chrome.

David N

There is nothing I can do with this small image on my laptop. It has no additional value for me at all.

Eelco Kruidenier

Thank you for your efforts. My iPad has died, but I have an Amazon tablet. Maybe I’ll try on that!

Anne Dexter

I had the same issue with my iPhone - no problem with the iPad though. I have just sent a message to Time Team on the Sketchfab app with some feedback on this. I have uploaded a lot of models to Sketchfab and have sort of worked out how to keep them to a size that will work on the iPhone - not sure how transferable this is to scanned models, but I have made the suggestion so hopefully this will help. Andy

same here - the app launches, the data downloads, then after a wait, a grid pattern appears, and that's it

Robin Goodfellow

I was thinking the same thing... will help give greater context to the dig once we see the trenches beginning.

Kerry Hennigan

Unfortunately these large 3D models do not work for me in my iPhone, they just crash every time. 😢

Anne Dexter

Great model. It’s going to be really useful to refer to this when viewing your future videos about each trench. Will help to give the context for each one. I love this way of using 3d models to help us understand the dig. Thank you. Andy

Andy Woodhead

That's amazing. Thanks!

Michael Taylor

Is there any chance we can have a simple 2D image as a backup?

Robin Goodfellow

its different and new so i like it, we never had this before and imagine it can only get better ;-) thanks guys

Some pretty intriguing crop marks in that field. Be interesting to find out if any of the trenches were put over them.
