S22 | Dig Watch: Knights Hospitaller Preceptory: Site Map (Photogrammetry)

Since Time Team has returned, we've transported you back to the Iron Age, Roman Britain, and the early Medieval period, to investigate an Anglo-Saxon Cemetery.

While there's still so much more to share of our Norfolk dig, it's time now to transport ourselves to a more recent period of history... about three weeks ago to be precise!

This weekend, we're heading back to Time Team's dig earlier this September: a Knights Hospitaller preceptory in Shropshire, near the Welsh border. Are you ready? Here we go...

Day Zero

The Data Dome and tents have been erected, the team are arriving on site from all four corners of Britain, and we're getting ready for another exciting three days ahead.

To kick things off, here's our first photogrammetry site map, created from Adam's aerial survey in advance of the team's arrival. On each day, we'll be revealing a new version of the map, overlaying new layers of data to reveal a fuller picture of the site.

NOTE: Map is strictly for personal viewing and not for distribution or publication!

Too many emails?

I look forward to receiving your emails, they are always full of fascinating facts

Helen L Robinson

I agree, MORE emails, please! They're wonderful.

Justin T Donie

Lot of interesting crop marks. Will love seeing what John's survey makes of it all, what is actually there.

Robert Boudreau

I think in the USA it's called 'photographic tile', as used in map georeferencing.

Jenna Leigh-Thompson

We've got some interviews with Adam coming up, talking more about what he does - photogrammetry incorporates a range of different techniques and ways of collecting/representing data from the landscape, which can be presented either in 3D or 2D.

Time Team

Thanks

Mark Lund

"Orthorectified'...sounds like a medical procedure! Ah, so looks like multiple photos creating a larger image rather than a 3D model(?). I did not know that was also termed photogrammetry, but I dont see why not. Stitched together in one plane, rather than lots of angles to create a 'model'.

Mark Lund

Hi Mark, we'll need to defer to our expert Adam to confirm exact details, but essentially this is aerial photography and photogrammetry, in that the image has been created from multiple aerial photos taken by the drone and then later stitched together digitally to create a map of the landscape. Technically it's an orthomosaic image, which obviously means that it has been 'photogrammetrically orthorectified' - remember that one next time you're playing Scrabble!

Time Team

What do you mean - 'too many emails?' Not enough - more please! 😊

Jill Bray

Looking forward to all the upcoming info. But surely this is an aeriel photo, rather than photogrammetry, i.e. 3D? Have I missed the point somewhere?

Mark Lund

Love all the emails - the more the merrier!!! Keep 'em coming!

Chrina Jarvis

Me too! I'm considering upping my Patreon account for even more content.... rather addictive 😂

Patricia Amero

Mark & Jill Jefson

I’d like to switch to the setting where I get like 30 updates a day please 😂😂😂never enough! Excited for dig one 🎉

Lacy Oden

ooo thats interesting, is there a video on how the map is compiled by any chance, love all these new toys to play with.

Jenna Leigh-Thompson

keep the emails coming!

Paul Miller

The amount of info and number of emails is just right for me! Feels like TT is getting well dialed in!
