S22 | Dig Watch: Knights Hospitaller Preceptory: Day One - The Castle

It's the morning of Day One in Shropshire...

While the rest of the crew have headed over to the main dig site, Derek and Lawrence have taken a brief detour to nearby Whittington Castle to meet a few characters.

In this video diary, we provide a revealing look behind the scenes while filming a key segment for the site's story.

Keep a look out for our Site Walkabout later in the day, plus another layer of data for our site map.

Sir Ralphus Pevenhull died on crusade. He is depicted as a knight. Richard, on hearing the news of his brother's death, took to be a hermit monk. He is depicted as a monk. I am only the third Pevenhull and there has never been a Mrs Pevenhull.

The coat of Arms is Fitzwarin. Lords of the marches. The Lee's of Stanton and Roden were underlords. From John Lee of Lee Hall, Pevehull came Ralph & Richard, identical twins. There funery effigy is in Shrewsbury Abbey.

That trip/stumble was probably more authentic than not!

Always enjoyed those humorous bits on Time Team.

Really excellent beginning! As the man in red was pointing out.... it was all in good fun for this shoot. I definitely had a chuckle. But in the past, wearing 70-80 pounds of armor in the heat of summer, with flies, no easy access to cold beverages, showers, and our niceties of modern life, whilst fighting for your life... Sounds nightmarish for them.

Love this! As a historian I always enjoy attempts at accurate reenactments. Though TBH I don't think we can fully really appreciate what life was like in the past. But what it can do is is give us a better understanding, and sometimes solve practical puzzles of why they did things in a particular way. We learn much from reenactments on all levels. I think of it as taking what we know from books and finds, and seeing how it actually works in practice, or as close to as we can get.

What fun!

Lived it. Jealous though, I like a bit of sword fighting
