Venerable Beads: Excavation By Water

We've already seen Naomi Sewpaul's flotation tank in action during our first new dig at Boden fogou in Cornwall.

Now, Dani Wootton catches up with the 'Flotation Queen' herself, to find out about some exciting recent finds revealed by Naomi's tank, from a site connected to her day job.

While flotation can be particularly useful in identifying environmental evidence – like pollen, carbonised grain or molluscs – it's equally valuable in recovering other small finds, including tiny pieces of jewellery.

Naomi and Dani shine a spotlight on these wonderful late Roman glass beads, and discuss how they might have been made.

Comments

Do I remember an early bead making center on the coast of northwestern Italy revealed by chemical analysis of beads "traded" afar? Can't find a publication. As portable goods it makes some sense including the trade in bulk glass. Fascinating. Great presentation.
