S21 | Masterclass: GPR (Broughton Roman Villa)

Jimmy Adcock really loves Patreon. Why? Because it gives him an outlet for “geeking out massively about geophysics, and specifically, about GPR.”

In our latest exclusive masterclass, the GPR whizz treats us to half an hour of fascinating insights on the data collected at Broughton Roman villa. In fact, we only asked for 15 minutes, but Jimmy just couldn’t help himself!

Jimmy provides a glimpse of the typical conversations that go on between the experts on site, while revealing some tantalising anomalies that remain unexplored on the site...

I loved this lesson and I'm delighted that I upgraded my membership so I could access this content. So insightful, so much excellent information. I would love more masterclasses if anyone is willing.

Jenna Tomlin

Love the lesson and insight into the improvements in systems from the first season to the newest. Wonderful, I can relate to GPR because I spent twenty-one years in the US Navy and a good bit of that time was spent running a radar in the P-3 Orion looking for ships at sea.

Marcus Hill

Great video! So interesting to see a bit more information on this and it would be interesting to see further data if you do get to go back to this site. Thank you!

Poppy Marks

Enjoyed the lesson. Slow understanding how to read the geophys.

Carl Johnson

Very nicely done, Jimmy. I did, though, wonder if a 3-D view was feasible with the visualisation software you're using.

Martin Packer

Thanks Jim,very well presented. I enjoyed it very much. I hope the next dig gets moving soon. Any hints! Farmer Rich from Massachusetts.

Why were all reversed? I mean, the video was all in mirror reverse here. I.e. only the Jimmy part was mirrored. His GPR graphics (which were excellent, btw) were all OK.

Arnstein Birkeland

Hi James, it's just Jimmy himself that's mirrored - all the screen capture of the site / data are in the usual perspective.

Time Team

An excellent video and very well presented by Jimmy.

Philip Stack

I got distracted by the video being reversed. All the text in the background was mirrored. Does that mean the scans of the ground were also mirrored?

This Master Class went a long way toward helping us understand the villa site. I agree with everyone, this was truly fascinating.

John Traphofner

I absolutely loved this. We need to see more of Jimmy. I wonder with more of these type of videos with the experts we could almost have an updated version of the final three shows in some online form where you could dig deeper into aspects discussed in the final cut. I was also drawn to the possible features to the north of the sarcophagus and would love to see a follow up dig. There was quite a bit at the site that appeared to require more time to fully understand.

David Boon

I agree it was fascinating. Thank you.
