Mindful Archaeology | Wellbeing

Much excellent work has been done in recent years to draw attention to issues surrounding mental health and wellbeing. Links are increasingly being drawn between archaeology and its benefits in helping to improve wellbeing, as well as recovery from traumatic experiences and promoting mindfulness.

This is a subject very close to Time Team's heart, having previously worked with Operation Nightingale to support soldiers who have returned from conflict. We're often humbled to discover that watching Time Team has provided some comfort to some fans in times of need.

In this video, Tim Taylor meets Dr Will Rathouse of the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) to find out more about some inspiring projects he has been involved with, both with the Thames Discovery Programme and Mind Aberystwyth.

We hope you find the conversation interesting and that it inspires you to continue looking after your own wellbeing!

There are many ways in which you can get involved in local community archaeology. Check out this recent video from Dani Wootton for a few ideas.

This is one of the most fascinating conversations Tim has shared with us. I appreciate the topic of mindfulness and how archaeology relates to it. I liked Tim’s ruminating about the philosophical concept of being in a dig surrounded in calm and silence, meditating, relating the place to the past and what it was. I remember Tony’s comments in past Time Team episodes, who in jest would express awe at a specific object, relating it to a living person hundred of years ago. Thank you.

This was a wonderful video. I remember the Time Team digs with Operation Nightingale participants and thought at the time that it was a great idea. It was wonderful to hear about the work of Dr. Rathouse and his associates. I really appreciated the tip about the Insight Timer app and have downloaded it and started using it right away. Thanks Tim, Dr Rathouse and everyone who shares their insight and experiences of dealing with various mental health issues (we all have them, to greater or lesser degrees). Best wishes from Australia.
