S22 | Anglo-Saxon Site Recce

We’re edging closer to this year’s digs and it’s a flurry of activity behind the scenes.

Before the entire crew descend upon the site for three days, a small advance team will first complete a reconnaissance mission to scope out the key logistics at each location:

Where will we put the data dome? Can we get electricity, internet and other services to the site? Most importantly, is the local real ale any good? (We all know who that final request came from.)

In this video (captured on a phone on a windy day!), we share some exclusive insights into the pre-production process.

COMING UP ON YOUTUBE: Stonehenge’s Mesolithic Pits

You may have seen the recent news of a fascinating research project at Stonehenge, featuring Time Team's very own Prof Henry Chapman. Join us on YouTube this Saturday at 7pm BST, as Dani Wootton catches up with Henry to get the lowdown: https://youtu.be/f47Ie9_o9qU

In the meantime, check out this incredible interactive 3D model of the team's work on Sketchfab:

Thanks so much for this superb content. Amazing how much information can be gathered from just a few pieces. The interaction from participants and the wonderful 3D reconstruction is simply marvellous. Can’t wait to find out where it takes us next.

JUDITH COOKE

The side on which the buttons were placed, was actually done to show the difference between mens and womens clothing!

I was taught that men’s shirt button the way they do because in bygone days they carried swords and to keep the hilt from catching in the shirt front (if not a tunic) the shirts buttoned left over right since right-handedness predominates in humans.
