S21 | Broughton Post-Ex 1: Pottery Analysis

As you'll know, the story of each site continues long after the trenches have been back-filled. Much of our understanding develops in the weeks and months of post-excavation work that follow a Time Team dig.

After our excavation at Broughton Roman Villa in Oxfordshire, Dani, Naomi and Matt visited the lab at Cotswold Archaeology to continue analysis of the finds.

In the first of a series of short videos, Dani speaks with Roman pottery expert, Paul Booth for a closer look at the assemblage from one of the trenches.

Coming up in future instalments: we hear from Naomi to discusses animal bones, while Matt tells us more about how he captures our incredible 3D photogrammetry models of small finds.

Dig Watch update

It's drawing frighteningly close to the start of our 2022 digs, and the list of preparations seems to be growing daily! We'll have lots more information to share on this very soon. For now, let's just say that September might be a busy month...

We're also considering the options for our third site, with more details and developments to follow in due course as the process unfolds.

Please watch this space for all the updates and, as always, thank you for your ongoing support!

Thank you! It's interesting to see the finds cleaned up and organized. The attention to detail is remarkable. I look forward to Part 2 with Naomi.

Very interesting to see sets of cleaned up pottery discussed in tandem. Considering the demand for pots, it makes one wonder what annual production volumes were, how many pots were needed/used in homes, taverns, food transporation, and what were the levels of inputs? How much charcoal was consumed each year, what types of wood were needed, other ingredients such as sand, shells.... It's quite a logistics story.
