Time Team Special: Wars of the Roses (2011) - FULL EPISODE

It's the end of the month, and just enough time to squeeze in our latest Classic Special on Patreon.

Once again, we have another fascinating episode lined up: "Wars Of the Roses"

The Battle of Bosworth was the decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses. It was the beginning of the end of three decades of treason, rebellion and dynastic warfare. Against huge odds, Henry Tudor won the day to take the English Crown.

Tony Robinson discovers that archaeologists' finds are changing the entire understanding, not just of this iconic battle, but the very nature of warfare at this time.

In order to test these theories the team build and fire some replica cannon, and deploy sophisticated cameras to examine the grisly remains of soldiers killed in the Wars.

The conclusions they draw radically change the romantic picture-book view of medieval warfare being ruled by knights in shining armour.

So happy you released this. Thanks!

Melissa Rybb

for one it was GREAT seeing Dr. Phil Harding and Toney doing a special together, if not together in any scene, but also I find this very interesting, in that they finally have the exact place where King Richard 3rd finally died. And to know NOW that also King Richard 3rd's Body remains were finally found, and also properly buried. Awesome! Thank you Time Team!

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Or as I like to think of it, the collective suicide of the English aristocracy

Jessica Brisbane

Only a year later, the body of Richard III was found and Tony and Time Team were not part of it. What a shame.

I wish they would do a follow up in the usa. Gator or Stewart found something americans had not. I wonder if they followed up. And I never saw a time team on the Scilly islands. I think there are a lot of burials there.

Hi Richard, glad you enjoyed it. This is one of our 'Classic' Specials back from 2011, but we're working on making more of these older episodes available from the vaults, in addition to developing brand new Specials too. Watch this space for more developments.

Hi Cindy, glad to hear that Elise is taking an interest in archaeology! There are lots of ways for kids to get involved, depending on which country you're in. Here in the UK, we have YAC (the Young Archaeologists' Club), but there might be similar organisations elsewhere. We'll put the questions to the team next time we do a Q&A. Thanks for watching!

Time Team

Hi Kenneth, we've provided subtitles for this video. If they are not coming up automatically, you may need to click on the cog icon near the bottom right of the video, then select CC. Hopefully that does the trick, but if not please do let us know. Thanks

Time Team

Please allow subtitles for us hard of hearing. The entry and exit of the spoken work make it very difficult got me to keep up. Thanks

I recall a reenactor died in one of TT classic episodes, but I don't remember which one

fascinating

Elizabeth Neill

Fascinating - but I would like to know if the re-enactors of the Battle of Bosworth ever suffer genuine accidents in the course of their fighting - or even the occasional fatality?

Chrina Jarvis

Given that the loudest noise most people heard in the 15th century was church bells or thunder, the report of cannon on the battlefield had to have been disconcerting if not terrifying. ⚔️

My granddaughter and I just finished watching this episode. She is seven years old and is named Elise. She lives in southern Missouri in the USA. She has some questions for you. Question #1: "If I am only seven years old, how can I do archeology?" Question 2: "Can I do archeology with just a trowel? I have Mom's trowel from when she did field school years ago, and Grandma has a Time Team Trowel." Question 3: "Why do you sometimes use a shovel instead of a trowel?" Question 4: "How many people work on Time Team now?" "Thank you for reading my questions and facts." (Grandma will let me know the answers.)

I am so happy to see Phil and Tony back doing these specials. Thank You.

Richard Kaskeski

I absolutely enjoy these programs 😀👍

Steve

Thank you. That's tomorrow evening's plans sorted out :)
