Dig Watch | Anglo-Saxon Cemetery: Jimmy on GPR

We've been delving through the archives to pick out another behind-the-scenes mini gem from our Anglo-Saxon cemetery dig at Winfarthing, Norfolk.

Here's our GPR guru, Jimmy Adcock, at the start of Day 1, with a quick run through of the kit we use for a large-scale ground penetrating radar survey.

During his Spoil Heap Q&A, John Gater touched on the challenges of using geophysics to locate a cemetery. Jimmy highlights some other limitations owing to the soil conditions.

If you'd like to find out more about GPR from Jimmy, check out his earlier Patreon Masterclasses, available to view in the Collections.

(Note: some masterclasses are available at a specific tier level)

We have lots more still to come this month, including another Classic Special and additional behind-the-scenes insights.

I am not a techie but was wondering how much memory is required for the database to map a site the size of this one? Crack on ace crack mapper Jimmy!πŸ“―

Hi Mike, it's always good to hear from Jimmy! GPR aside, analysis and reporting continues long after each excavation, and there are some interesting post-dig developments that add further context to the Winfarthing story. We'll be sharing the latest findings and interpretations in a special session in the new year. Look out for more details of that soon.

Lovely to hear from Jimmy again, and I hope we will hear from him again [post dig], it was a shame [sorry to sound anal] that it was only 3min 15sec, with a 30sec intro, lets hope for more, shortly????

Well said, Clive.

Good to hear from Jimmy. The incredibly useful but much-maligned GPR is a great part of Time Team. And I loved him in the Communards! Oh, not that Jimmy lol
