Ask Naomi and Dani...
Added 2023-12-13 11:23:51 +0000 UTC
With the end of the year approaching, Naomi and Dani will be catching up for one of their much-loved chats to reflect on 2023. Expect festive themes, unique insights and plenty of banter.
We couldn't let the occasion pass without some of your questions, so what would you like to ask them?
Please let us know in the comments, and we'll try to get through as many as we can!
If we could return to / revisit a classic Time Team location, with todayβs technology and team of specialists, where do you think would benefit from the advancements?

Naomi, have you found foxglove before in burials? it is high in digitalis, but the dead are not likely to need stimulation, so why should it have been included in the burial of the Anglo-Saxon lady? Just as a medical element?

Naomi, have you often found foxglove as part of a burial? I know it is high in digitalis, but the dead are not liable to be excitable, so why would the Anglo-Saxons use it as a burial item?

Both: What part or parts of the archaeological process do you like doing the best?

Possibly for both - you have a lot of experience with being on camera, but I wonder whether you still find it stressful? I always get stage fright as a speaker and I imagine it can be similar filming a show. Any secret tips to alleviate the anxiety? :)

Thanks for your great work on Time Team Naomi and Dani. If you could go anywhere in the world for an archaeological dig, where would it be? (You would be most welcome in Canada :-)

Time Team has found and revealed history of Neanderthal cultures in many ways that challenge Modern Man's condescension that our Ancient Ancestors were dirty and unkept. Recent article from WAPO on Neanderthal DNA circadian cycles, and an earlier BBC history documentary both portrayed the Neanderthal re-creations with unkept hair and dirty hands, fingernails. The countless Combs and other small tools for cleaning nails and ears, tweezers, etc. that your Teams have found challenge this Modern Humans' arrogance. Please use your academic and professional experience to publicly challenge such negative stereotypes and the ensuing assumption we Moderns are so much better? Praise to you all, Martha

On recent WAPO about Neanderthal DNA and circadian DNA, passed on to current generations, as well as an earlier HISTORY.BBC documentary about Neanderthals, the re-created images of the people portrayed them with chaotic hair, and very dirty fingernails. This seems be a "knee-jerk" negative stereotype, especially as Time Team has found countless elaborate combs and other small tools for cleaning fingernails and extracting earwax. Please use your academic & professional status to challenge such imagery--again, that plays into the idea of Modern Humans as having higher status.

Naomi, since the flotation stuff can add more to the story of a site. How do you feel about sites where this was not done or thought of? What are some excavations where you really wish it had been done?

Dani and Naomi, wpuld you both tell us how you got into Archaeology? At what age did you discover your interest in it? Thanks!

Naomi and Dani, big question ... and one I find I ask myself a lot... what is it about the past and the archaeological window view into it that you find important for your lives and humanity in general today? Why do you think it "matters"? I love the obvious enthusiasm you and the team both have for archaeology and its related branches just wondering if you ever reflect on what drives you. Cheers robert

In some Modern Cultures (Africa) the soil is not plowed. Seeds are planted by poking holes in the earth, not disturbing the micro-biome. When and Why did our Ancient Ancestors come up with the idea of complicated plowing--blades, oxen, harnesses, etc. to "turn over the soil" and later the deep plowing "Ridge & Furrow." Modern agriculturalists no longer recommend the "French double turning soil" gardens. Now we know that Trees and Plants "talk to each other" through that micro-biome, what do you think the Neolithic etc. cultures were thinking about plowing.

Question for both - what do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Archaeology-related or totally not related? Assuming Time Team does not take up 100% of your time of course!

My best to both of you brilliant and lovely ladies and Seasons Greetings as well. This may have already been asked and if so, please forgive the redundancy, but what ignited the spark in you that led you to where you are today please? For me, for example, it was visiting Yellowstone in Winter that led to my love of geology. Thank you for your time.

2 questions for Naomi...
1) Was the Time Team special "Steel City" the first time you were on Time Team?
2) I have a memory of Naomi, wearing a blindfold, identifying bones by touch... Could be a long time ago, now, but... Naomi, can you still do this?
Lynn Edwards

Biscuits and tea, or beer? More seriously, do you ever work under lights due to the time constraint of a three-day dig, or any other dig, to get as much done as possible?

Why do you think so much was lost, in terms of architecture and technological advancement (plumbing/heating/concrete), as Briton transitioned from its Roman period to the Anglo-Saxon period? Have a great holiday season! πβ€οΈ

I'd ask both (and original members of T.T.) what time period (and where) they'd most like to 'visit', if they could go back in time for a short stay. As experts in their specialty, it would be fun hearing if they have a favorite historical era.
