Return to Boden Fogou: Extended Edit
Added 2023-12-20 19:55:07 +0000 UTC
3D reconstruction artist, Matt 'Bear' Clark returns to the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall, to find out the latest developments at Boden Fogou.
In this extended edit of the story featured in this month's Time Team News, Bear shares more insights from Site Director James Gossip, and finds expert, Carl Thorpe.
So, has this changed your view on the primary function of a fogou? Let us know in the comments...
While I love seeing new things on time team I often wonder what happened next. I really like this extended view which we get on patreon. Please bring us more "return to" features!

I think that the fogou's original role was religious, and if they were used for refuge and storage, those were secondary uses. Fogous feel like man-made caves, and having seen The Green Knight over Christmas, I have been thinking about caves, and perhaps inevitably, about passage tombs and barrows. On a gut level, an underground sacred space seems somehow related to these stoneworks. Is it the case that all fogous have one exit into the surrounding ditch? Is it a pattern to have two round houses in a ditch enclosure? If so, why?

I've always enjoyed Bear's work on 3D graphics constructions at the various Time Team sites.

Lovely 3D tech by Bear. I want to acknowledge how sweet the bird song is in the background. I think all of Britain's Starling squawkers have moved to Canada's western provinces killing most of our song bird's incubating eggs! Robins are rare, now as a result along with most song birds, so yes please, keep bringing us the bird song recorded in your clips.

Great work by Bear here.
Truly fascinating insight into the depths of the fogou. The 3D imaging was also excellent.
Looking at the sherds and understanding what they represent was appreciated too.
Had never heard of fogous until this episode and have now looked them up, but Wikipedia could do with a little more information.

Can you find me a new entrance I’d fit through 😄 - I think we can deduce that Iron Age people were not so big 🐻

I’m told the natural shattered bedrock seems to let a lot of the rainfall water drain away / soak in - but there must have been a low point in that outer ditch where it gathered. Would be interesting to work that out.

Fogou usage? IMO protection from invasion by other tribes and (gulp) yes...also ritual.
Bear, I'm in awe of your absolute genius techno-wizardry✨ Time Team Patrons are fortunate to have such an excellent calibre of technicians & specialists in so many fields of expertise.
I'm incredibly proud to be here. 🤟😊

This has me thinking about this lintel / ditch area and how it would have behaved in rainy weather. Hard to tell from watching the video what the relationship is between the opening and the bottom of the ditch, but it seems like if there wasn't other drainage, water would flow inside.
- Is that accurate? and if so, why would the makers of the fogou have wanted that water to flow in?
- If not accurate, where did the water that came down into the ditch flow away to and what might be discovered digging in that wash area?

Excellent. We like the fogou-based digs because... well... who doesn't like a fogou???
