Added 2022-12-23 20:08:57 +0000 UTC
Thanks to everyone who has watched, liked and commented on our latest dig. We hope you enjoyed the first outing of the Expedition Crew – the first of many projects to complement the traditional three-day digs, coming up over the next few months.
Let us know what you think of this new approach in the comments section.
If you haven't seen it yet, catch up here:
Day 1: https://youtu.be/Qzba8ZrKQA8
Day 2: https://youtu.be/MB8J1QgO3IE
It's time for another 3D model, on this occasion created with drone photogrammetry by our equally talented Adam Stanford of Aerial Cam.

Also, I'd like to add my voice to the idea of the Expedition Crew. This is a wonderful idea.

Do you think there's something more under the woman inside, given the depth of the sarcophagus itself?

I greatly enjoyed the two sarcophagus expedition segments. But it got me thinking about what speculatively the reason was for it being there. Given the size of the object, it's extreme weight and it's physical isolation made me wonder if perhaps it was carved on site or had another original purpose or use. Of course it may have been planned earlier and had to be suddenly used for a burial before being finished, but given the extensive planning for the adjacent villa, it just seems unlikely that such a massive piece of stone was moved there simply for a single burial which could have been accomplished in a much more expeditious way.

I think the 'Expedition Crew' idea is great! There are always a lot of details to the digs, far beyond what is possible to contain in a 1 hour (or even hour and a half) programme. This is a wonderful way to revisit a site to get more detailed info that just wasn't possible during a 3-day dig. I loved being able to get into more depth (literally!) with some exciting archaeology around the sarcophagus. My only regret about this was that the final segment seemed rushed, as both new discoveries and analysis had to fit into 15 minutes. I would have loved to see a little more analysis and also more of the re-interment (with appropriate ceremony) which was shown with a single shot at the end. If production costs support it for future, it would be wonderful to have even another 5 minutes to the second segment, or possibly to do 3 segments instead of just 2. Wonderful content, thanks so much!

In December, we announced that Sir Tony Robinson will be returning to the Time Team family for new 'Specials' documentaries. We're in the early stages of development, and we'll update you as the process continues. In the meantime, we'll be hearing much more from Tony very soon.

Hi Jon, the return to the sarcophagus with the Expedition Crew was in addition to the upcoming 3rd dig. We are currently developing Site 3 (a West Country village with links to early European settlers in North America), and have recorded a 'Site Wrestle' session with Tim and Dani, which is on the way very soon.

Where was it mentioned that Phil would be involved? I would love it if this were true!

The Expedition Crew is a neat idea, but did this short dig program constitute the coveted “3rd dig” we were promised after we hit that Patreon goal? I did not see it mentioned one way or the other. Either way, keep that new stuff coming!

What is the significance of Roman dirt/earth under the sarcophagus? How deep is the sarcophagus? Will it date the sarcophagus? Will it reveal what crops were being produced? Theoretically, mightn't be that the dirt underneath the sarcophagus is Iron Age dirt?

I have a question, and I apologize if it was explained in the program and I missed it.

This expedition crew concept could be applied to some of the buildings visited, like the Devon farmhouse, or Broughton Castle, or to new "above ground" locations. I can imagine a library of 3D scans and potted histories of buildings like https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1360056?section=official-list-entry

I am super pleased with the post-dig Expedition Crew concept. Honestly... my Patreon experience just gets better as TT puts me virtually in the trenches. A++

Really enjoyed this follow up. Would like to hear more on this once Naomi has had a chance to examine the bones. Plus, agree with previous comments about where the cover was taken too.

Questions:
The stone sarcophagus is deeper than the lead liner. What is beneath the lead liner?
As it was not shown in the skeletal layout by Naomi, was the head of the skeleton found in 1963?
If the cover of the stone sarcophagus was broken up and disposed of in another location in the 1960s to reduce likelihood of damaging farm equipment, what are the stones that were reassembled from around the stone sarcophagus from?

The episodes were good but I agree that there needed to be a summary of what was learnt at the end - especially around the scientific analysis of bones and soil we were left hanging…

I love the Expedition Crew format but feel they could be 30 minute episodes rather than 15 as so much is revealed. The end of Ep 2 seemed rushed and could have benefited with Derek and Helen recapping the finds and new knowledge. Am I being greedy after being deprived of TT for so many years? Sorry, but yes!

Is there some justification that the sarcophagous be lowered before reinternment to protect it from future soil erosion and the shallow plough soil layer?

Haven't got to part 2 yet - I'm locked into pretending to be a reindeer with the 9yo.
But I loved part 1. It really benefits from the presentation style; much more straightforward and conversational than last year's full episodes (great though they were too). The great thing about TT of old was that it never felt like we the audience were being talked at, but being invited into a conversation. Last year, we didn't quite get that all the time; whereas this has it in spades.
