Dig Watch | Modbury: Day 2

Hey, i just joined last week (after trying to ignore joining for 2 years lol). I love ths community style excavation, it reminds me of the late great Mick Aston back in the day (on an old episode) talking enthusiastically about involving the local community, driving enthusiasm for local archaeology Well done Time Team. Much love from Scotland.

Robert Stetson is also my ancestor; it was thrilling for me to see this featured on Time Team! I feel very lucky about this, although I know I’m only one of thousands of his descendants. While I understand some may think this (the family’s story) is extraneous to archaeology, isn’t part of our fascination with it is the imagining of what life was like during the time frame of the investigation? Similar the the reenactment antics of Phil and Matt?

This is so good! Emily and her team have so many incredible stories to focus on, I'm really looking forward to the full Time Team show(s). Loads of giggles but also TONS of food for thought. 😎👍

Thank you for the kind offer, Margaret. I don't have a genealogy on hand - I am going on oral history. I am curious - are there dozens of Quick's there? If so, I wouldn't expect a complete list, but I could look into it further.

Andy Quick

This isn’t the final program. It’s a little glimpse of what’s happening on-site during the dig.

Rhonda K Hageman

This is not the final program, you know. It’s just a chance to see a little of what’s happening on-site during the dig.

Lovely - I enjoy the Dig Watch updates - a little bonus insight into the progress of the Time Team digs ahead of the final programmes to be shown in a few months. Keep them coming.

Neil Ford

I want to watch a dig! As it says on the tin.

Dave Ludlam

Still, I am glad to be supporting archaeology in a small way, and wish the team well.

Valerie Aston

I am feeling rather disappointed. There's too much pointless banter and little real information. Hopefully tomorrow's edition will be more meaty. I do wonder if it is because they haven't had much time to edit the footage. Perhaps in a few weeks' time TT will post some kind of excavation report.

Valerie Aston

So much fun. Thanks!

Quite a bit of discussion,, not much physical archeology depicted… as a common sort of guy, I could care less about manor houses, and the like… in the future please consider focus on the life and accomplishments of common man.

Larry Besel, Jr.

I loved learning the history/origin of the Stetson!

Lori Benton

He's an 18th great-grandfather in my family tree as well.

I live in Modbury and can have a look. What names?

Margaret Anne Middleton

It looks like I am descended from the Champernowne family, although my ancestors live much earlier. I have an ancestor, Richard Champernowne, Lord of Modbury, born before 1344 and died 1419 in Modbury. https://www.geni.com/people/Sir-Richard-Champernon-Knight-and-Sheriff-of-Devonshire/6000000006906868879

Mick would have looked good (actually ridiculous) in a Stetson🤠

Eggs Ackley

I'm pretty sure I have ancestors that came from Devon to southern Ontario, Canada. It would be interesting to show some of the gravestones in the cemetery around the church, even just a few minutes. This may be of interest to others watching as well. Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to seeing this episode. Thank you.

Andy Quick

Some much fun. Wish we could be there. Thanks to all.

Looks like it will be another excellent show. Great to see family history being included.

Very exciting ,can't wait

PHILIP MAY

Watching in Harwich MA not too far from Plymouth. Buckets of rain this weekend while you have sun! Locals often introduce themselves with last name and generation from new world arrival. Not the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe members of course who predate.

Ann H

I would happily fly from the States to be part of a dig and hang out in the pub with Time Team!

choklityum

I am very ready for the full episodes! It sounds like it's going to be an exciting dig!

choklityum

Not Derek and Not Lawrence LOL

Emma R

Looks like a great time! Beautiful countryside.

Todd Gillespie

The link to the Stetson hats family was interesting and unexpected. I'm looking forward to see how that arc unfolds.

Paul Faulkner

In memory of Mick, hope someone buys him a glass of red wine. I'm sure he's watching over the landscape and celebrating the community dig.

Here's an idea for a Patreon reward: winner gets to sit in on a Pub scene at the end of a dig!
