Dig Watch | Modbury: Spoil Heap Q&A - Dr Sophie Kay
Added 2023-06-29 12:22:34 +0000 UTC
It's a big weekend ahead but, for now, we're rewinding back to our community dig at Modbury, where we introduced geneaological researcher, Dr Sophie Kay.
This was the perfect site to showcase Sophie's ancestry experience, both as an archival researcher and a scientist who has specialised in DNA.
We caught up with Sophie to answer your questions.
(We've previewed a bit of this already in the daily updates. Now, here's the extended interview.)
fantastic, what a font of knowledge she is. So very interesting.
question: how do i go about getting my y and x done?
i guess it costs a fare few pounds? lol

Fascinating explanations, especially about the tracing of crafts. Sophie Kay demonstrates the possibility of perpetual motion, spending her energy in a way that generates more energy.

I am not sure whether Sophie will get to see any of these comments but I would love to know more about accessing church warden records.

If you are interested in DNA testing the Y-DNA and mitochondrial tests are commercially available but just not marketed as heavily and cost more than the autosomal, particularly the Y-DNA. It has taken my knowledge of my direct male line further back in terms of the surname and well beyond that in terms of when it came to Britain.

Great explanation of the DNA and the importance of tracking occupations. I'm the family historian and I really liked this Q&A. Would love to share it with my local genealogical society, when possible.

Loved the explanation of the DNA and how mass-market DNA test compare to professional DNA tests. Looking forward to learning what gets revealed in this dig. Hope you can join future digs.

Lovely to check my email and find the much awaited spoil heap had arrived. Even better to see one of my questions asked. Not only that but the answer has given me some thoughts on my own family history where there is a gap in the records in the mid-1600s. The discussion about the church warden records was not only fascinating but has made me think more about a William Boone who was a church warden in Curry Mallet, Somerset about 35 years before the second of my long line of first born sons named William was born there. I am now going in search of churchwarden records to see if any exist which may bridge the gap.
As a big fan of DNA I was impressed with the very good explanation of the different types of tests. I have done all three and by far the most exciting is the Y-DNA which has connected Boon/e lines across the countries of the British Empire and revealed a deep history in Britain after the last ice-age. DNA is transforming archaeology and it is great to see Time Team featuring it in a dig.

Great video, a really nice explanation of the different DNA techniques and great insights into the records too, thank you! I have to say the comment about the baseball cap got me thinking - they do keep the sun out of your eyes, but really you want something with a nice brim all the way around to keep the sun off your neck and ears too. So how about a Time Team Stetson? :-)
