Anglo-Saxon Cemetery: Winfarthing Pendant - 3D Model

Who was impressed by the 3D model of the Winfarthing pendant? We certainly were! Thanks to Matt Bear and the Shadow Tor team for creating this incredible model.

In this short video, Bear captured the story of how it was digitised for us, tracing his journey from the far west of Cornwall to the far east of Norfolk!

To explore the model in all its glory, view it on Sketchfab HERE.

A stunning piece, and a brilliant 3D rendering, thank you. So similar to the Staffordshire Hoard, they really liked this garnet and gold combo, and who can blame them! For those interested in going down the rabbit hole of Saxon jewelry, there's an interesting article on the thegns.org blog titled "The Garnet Code", exploring the significance of the garnet in Saxon jewelry related to its geometric shape. If nothing else, it's thought provoking.

I wonder what the time difference is between this burial and Sutton Hoo burials. The jewellery as is stated is less polished as the other types of anglo-saxon jewellery. Could it be older? People start making jewellery and they get better and fine tune over the years, or even pass on the skills, teaching the younger generations. This could be one of the first of its kind. Just a thought…

That wasn’t Gus. I believe it was Derek.

Anglo-Saxon jewelry and other metalwork always blows me away. The artistry and skill are evident in each and every piece.

Bear... you and your amazing techno-wizardry knocked it out of the park on this one! 🤯 mind-blowing detail... thank you so much 🙏 huge respect.

The Anglo-Saxons definitely had a flare for artistry and this piece is beautiful! The 3D modeling is fantastic, and gosh I love Time Team!

Does anyone know if it's possible to have alternative audio tracks on Youtube? If so, it would be a good idea to have both an "accessible" version as well as the one with the background music. For me the background music is an important part of the "Time Team experience", but it is of course also important to make the content accessible to everyone.

Thank you to the Team for the time and effort that they put in to the recording of these wonderful objects we may never have the chance to see for ourselves

Julie Gray

It's spoilt because of the background music. Please cut it out, I can't hear Gus.

That's what I was wondering too. Thanks for providing a likely explanation, Loz. I suppose the polished bone was a rounded disk with a hole in the middle and the gold shaft of of the "nipple" was put through it and secured in the back with that other gem? This is one hefty and engineered piece of jewelry.

Thank you so much for these videos. Helps keep me sane in the face of the craziness here in the US.

DIANA R NELSON

What an incredible privilege to get to view an item like this so closely in a high-detail digital scan. Thank you!!

Loz

Based on similar artefacts it may have been polished bone: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-28486128

Loz

Preserved forever until the next encryption and format changes. But it is a start! Hurray!

Diana Patterson

Do we know what material was originally supporting the "nipples"? Probably some organic material as it appears to be mostly gone.

Wolfgang Zenker

It was awesome!

Kay Theriault

The artistry and craftsmanship of the time never fails to take my breath away! Thank you so much for sharing it with us!

Mick Holden
