We are shocked and saddened by the devastating flash floods that have swept through central Greece this week.

Dr Derek Pitman writes: “Over the last 8 years while working in Thessaly, as part of a multinational archaeological project, we have been warmly welcomed by the communities of Vlochos, Metamorfosi, Markos, Astritsa and Palamas. It’s thanks to the help and kindness of these amazing people that I am able to write this. I have just left Thessaly, along with our team after being evacuated from the floods. While we were lucky to find safety, many others are still trapped and sadly some have not survived. A significant part of the initial rescue efforts were thanks to the tireless efforts of heroic individuals and local volunteers, and I have never witnessed such bravery or resilience. I hope to soon share details of ways to help with the recovery.
To everyone that helped us, from the people of Thessaly, to our friends from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Karditsa and the Swedish Institute at Athens: Thank you.”
