Time Team Special: Castle of the Saxon Kings (2011) - FULL EPISODE

For our next Classic Special, we're off to Northumbria in North East England, to investigate the impressive Bamburgh Castle. This dramatic fortress, perched on the cliff just along the coast from the famous island monastery at Lindisfarne, was once the powerbase of Anglo-Saxon kings during Northumbria's so-called Golden Age.

The castle (under its Saxon name, Bebbanburg) is the setting of much of the action in Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom. Watch Bernard chatting to our very own Tim Taylor about his own family's personal connections to Bamburgh HERE.

Monthly Classic Specials

Don't forget, every month, we're releasing one Classic Special on YouTube, plus one extra Classic Special for our members on Patreon!

"... getting ready to release our first brand new Special, featuring Tony Robinson..." I can't tell you how much just hearing this makes my week. 🥰

Great stuff. While looking for Hadrian's wall some years ago on holiday, I saw the castle but didn't have time to take a good look @ it. It was getting dark & I had to have the rental car back that day. As it turned out I only saw the wall from far away. I have to say I really like this Island & it's history.

That protagonist - Uhtred - is the rightful lord of Bamburgh and seeks to reclaim it.

Michael O'Connor

Bernard Cornwell wrote a series of novels (The Saxon Chronicles) based on historical events, but with a protagonist who is a Saxon, but raised by Danes. The novels were turned into a TV series called The Last Kingdom. The series was good, but the novels are even better.

Michael O'Connor

What are the Cornwall novels, please

Caroline W

Very interesting! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this one.

Excellent episode. I got a kick out of John Gater facing off with the horse in the pasture. There’s so much yet to be learned.

Sharyle Doherty

How timely. I'm reading through the Cornwell novels and it's so nice to have a visual of the rock that Bamburgh sits upon.

This is so exciting to see these "classic" episodes, available again! I remember watching them on our local Public Broadcasting Station (KIPBS) decades ago ... at least it seems that long ago. Thank you all Crew and Patrons.

What a great episode!! Thanks for sharing 💕

Matt and Phil's parting repartee is priceless. Thanks for the memories...

Over 20 + years I stand amazed at the stone builders and stone carvers of ancient times. My G'g'fa from 1840s Prussia, Coburg & Leipzig U. was a sculptor of memorials and structural embellishments. I hope Time Team will provide much more detailed history of the life and times of those stone masons, explore the skilled master masons and decorative sculptors of the buildings in their archaeology. Brill! I like the Saxons stuff... having to piece together the physical evidence because so little was written down.
