Sutton Hoo | Week 2: Highlights (Time Team)
Added 2024-06-15 19:09:13 +0000 UTC
It's been another busy week here at Sutton Hoo, and we're thrilled to share some early highlights from Week 2, including a few very exciting developments to end on...
(Note: This update has been edited direct from the field in rapid time, in order to keep you up to speed on all the latest news! The full story will continue to emerge in the weeks ahead, culminating in the Time Team Special, to be released at a later date.)
WORD OF THE DAY
Before watching, please take note of our latest 'Word of the Day', courtesy of Lawrence: 'Phenomenology'
“Phenomenology is commonly described as the study of phenomena as they manifest in our experience, of the way we perceive and understand phenomena, and of the meaning phenomena have in our subjective experience. More simply stated, phenomenology is the study of an individual's lived experience of the world.”

Wow, if that is a boat, it would be a significant find! I must admit I'm jealous of the history...we have our history here in the USA but not like over there.

I was excited about it, too. I wonder if the Team will have any opportunity to confirm it's a boat before this dig is over. And, I wondered if it was a boat that sank, or a boat that had been buried on dry land that was now underwater.

Yes, the fabric is linen, it has been saddened and is now looking green, as expected. The onion skins are in the pot next to it, the pot with the bright yellow and a mordant is being used. We have found that they retain their colour rather well. The clips of film shown here were just a few seconds spliced together of a few hours of filming. Copper pots were also being used that day. But you're right in saying..... "Unpredictable". Thanks for your comment

I'm literally stood on the hill looking down to where they are doing a test pit 🤩.....I'd love to be able to walk down and watch but I think I'll probably get thrown out 😭

A word about the dyeing. The fabric in the metal cauldron is, I presume linen? The dyestuff is weld and tansy. The metal of the cauldron (iron?) would be having a saddening effect on the colour obtained, that is a darkening of the colour obtained. That is quite a bright yellow, particularly on linen, so I’d love to hear more about that. With regard to the onion skin. Once again a lovely colour, but sadly it is transient, so fades quite quickly in sunlight. As always it is hard to make definite rules about natural plant dying as rarely two batches turn out the same. Unpredictable is the word!

😂 not sure about winter here in West Australia. Maybe as a dress on its own or, over skivi top and matching tights.
Just enough to keep the cold at bay.
Not that we are having much of that so far this winter: usually, sunny days get quite cold and when it rains, it’s more tepid, but this June, we’ve had beautiful sunny days with very little cloud cover. Tomorrow - Tuesday for example, low of 8•c @ ~06:30 and a high of 18•c @ ~ 13:00.
Not too hot, not too cold: great Goldilocks weather.
😂🤭😇😎

So good to see that Stewart has lost his bubble head.
Derek and Lawrence along with Helen are Ab Fab. Knowing we have to wait until 2025 to see the actual complete show is mental.
I want a blue outer dress like the one Hilde wore.
Keep up the great work guys.
Thanks from Australia. 🇦🇺

I realize that Time Team on YouTube has the closed captions, and sometimes they are slightly comical. I was hoping that the subtitles might be applied to the Patreon videos when they’re dropped on the Patreon software, rather than having to wait until they drop on YouTube. Small request but definitely not a deal breaker. Thanks again!

Excellent episode! The effects of new emerging technologies is really astounding and exciting. I’m a Patreon from the start and feel very proud of any small part that I may share in these results. I would like to offer one small suggestion. I realize that there are many factors such as wind noise that are hard to compensate for. I would appreciate, given all limiting factors, if subtitles were available before the videos are available on Time Team Official with subtitles. Thanks again and I anxiously await all the updates to come.
