Sutton Hoo | Volunteer Test Pits: Tuesday 18th June (Timelapse)

Our Patreon volunteers arrived on site yesterday, having travelled from all over the globe, as far as Europe, America and even Australia!

We'll be hearing from them and watching their progress in the end of week highlights, so keep a look out for all the developments right here on Patreon.

In the meantime, here's a timelapse from yesterday afternoon at the test pits. As you can see, our volunteers have been getting stuck in and doing an excellent job!

Comments

Kay from finds processing told me they were Viper's Bugloss or something similar.

A Bleese

The Time Lapse certainly emphasises the energy, commitment and enthusiasm of the Team. It would have been great to be there. Congratulations to everyone.

JUDITH COOKE

Thank you Martin. It was nice to meet you too.

Orla Levy

Nice to have met you, Orla.

Martin Packer

Somebody mentioned they had "bug" in their name and that they were poisonous.

Martin Packer

There were people from America and Australia volunteering. You may be lucky next time.

Orla Levy

They are wild orchids

Orla Levy

Thank you for a fantastic experience. I really enjoyed the dig and learned so much. Hopefully i will be back again.

Orla Levy

Did anyone get the name of the tall blue / purple flower stalks? Or their name?

Martin Packer

We have some more timelapse from another angle, 360-Cam and Specs-Cam, all filmed at the test pits on the way!

Time Team

Narration and context on the way!

Time Team

Excellent, the future looks bright for you. You'll be back working in the trenches soon. 🙌

Patricia Amero

Will be getting the first one done later in the year. Mine is arthritis and I was ok when it was only one. Then the left hip decided to join in. Have volunteered on some digs where I live in Tasmania a few years back but would love to get to an English dig one day. Fortunately I have an archaeologist friend there who can get me involved.

David Boon

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍

Cheryl Kurucz

Well. I must be honest. This video didn’t do anything for me. I guess I value narration and context. Sorry.

Lorene Sinclair

Try watching this to "Yakety Sax" by Boots Randolf, it will make you smile. Happy Digging Patreots.

Mark Allen

...in an overly dramatic & Monty Python-esque fashion 😉 "bring out yur dead"

Patricia Amero

😅 I hear you! I have congenital hip malformations, got Titanium/Zirconium Hybrid replacements in my 20s... returned to work (school) 3 months later both times... Life-changing, I hope you get yours soon and can join a future dig.🤞

Patricia Amero

Cheers.

Dave Ludlam

I don't know how our pit was chosen. Possibly because it was in line with the hub.

Martin Packer

I bet you wish you could do all the digs this quick, great work just wish I had been chosen to be their

Garry Matthews

Give them a rest!

Alan McMillan

Music added a lighthearted touch to what must be a lot of hard work. Fun to watch, sort of like an old time movie. Great opportunity for volunteers, even if it is hard work. I’d love to be there.

Mary Lu Perham

Our volunteers were selected at random from the applicants on Patreon. There are also volunteers provided by the National Trust, via their own process.

Time Team

Random selection, mostly.

Martin Packer

How were you chosen?

Dave Ludlam

How were these patreon volunteers chosen?

Dave Ludlam

Did you sent out to be rude to the enthusiast volleys?

Leigh Francis

Terrible music :-(

Marisa Mia

That is fabulous x

Katrina Copping

Oh, and if you do go, don't forget to pick up one of the Sutton Hoo - Time Team badges.

Craig Richardson

Popped down for the day on Tuesday, and had a wander down to River View Field to check out the test pits, probably not long before this was filmed. Sutton Hoo is always worth a visit (this was my second in less than a month), but if you get the chance while the team is there, I would strongly recommend it, and daft as it sounds, the thrill of getting a chance to stand in the Time Time dome was palpable.

Craig Richardson

What was the drone filming??

Eirona Johansen

What does the Turkish Army have to do with Sutton Hoo?

BEAUSABRE23

Question for Matt or any of the archeologists; I'm from the USA and have never been to Britain (yet that is). I love the history behind Britain and can only imagine the excitement of being a part of a dig of this importance. If there is one, what's the one place outside of Britain that you would love to dig and learn more about?

Korey

Loved the time lapse and the music. Put a smile on my face

Mark Morgan

So great to see what they are up to. Once I get new hips I might be able to put my hand up for a dig. At least speeded up I would look a bit quicker getting up from the kneeling position even with the current hips. 😂

David Boon

Such fun !😊

Tom Gooden

I had no idea the camera was even on, imagine my surprise! Great work today!

Dan Angelino

This was so fun to watch... you go Time Team Volunteers🙌 I visualize myself slowly crawling across the screen, dragging a tea trolly... stopping to wipe my brow (possibly keeling over) 😅

Patricia Amero

So envious. I would have loved to have been picked to dig. Maybe next time!

Amethyst Gray

#3!

Nigel Sadler

So excited about visiting next week!

Laura and Alex Tovey

Yep; That's us. Which one is yours, Nigel?

Martin Packer

Test Pit 4 was Dan, Chris, Dave and I. I thought the camera would move around but it's basically all us.

Martin Packer

So many great possibilities with every scrape of a trowl 🏛

KEVIN COOKE

What an amazing opportunity!!

Emily Spencer

If I weren’t 11 I would be there for sure!! Maybe in future Time Team can have a more kid-friendly Patreon dig opportunity? Please?

Elizabeth Esser

Well done, volunteers and All. With you in spirit for sure!🕺🌿😎💕

Graham Stokes

Just been there they are all working hard its fascinating seeing some of what they have found. I heard that these test pits are bringing up a lot of neolithic finds.

Martin Gibbs

I am very jealous. I had really wanted to be a part of this dig. I’m sure the volunteers are over the moon being a part of this Time Team dig. I wish them success and hope they make some finds.

Lauren

That is test pit #4 of 10 in the foreground.

Nigel Sadler

What a wonderful opportunity! I wish I could be there too!

Jen A

Nooooo! I was there yesterday and didn't know 😭 I had considered popping back again on Thursday, I'm fascinated by the scans that can be done nowadays, I did start OU Earth Science degree, but I've only done the first year 😳

Kathy Ball

Hope to come by & visit in July

sarah carlisle

“Getting stuck in” is one of my favorite Britishisms . 😁

Julianne Ture

Lucky devils 😉 Looking forward to seeing it all tomorrow.

Jamie Goodman

Just a 26 hour flight and I could be there too. 😉

Graham Dombkins

Wish I could be there!
