Thank you to all of our Sutton Hoo volunteers!

It's the end of Week 3 here at Sutton Hoo, and we'd like to extend a huge thank you to all our fantastic volunteers, both in the test pits and Garden Field excavation.

Whether travelling 9,000 miles or from the local town, we've been overwhelmed by your enthusiasm and hard work in the heat of the sun!

We hope you enjoyed the experience, and thanks for representing all of our Patreon members worldwide.

For everyone else who applied, sorry you weren't selected this time. Following this success, we hope to offer more opportunities in future, so please do keep a look – you never know, next time, it could be you!

Coming Up

We're now busy putting together highlights from this week. Look out for those by the end of the weekend. There's plenty more Sutton Hoo action still to come, including interviews with Helen and Sam Newton, capped off by another live episode next week, featuring Tony Robinson. Watch this space for more details...

Thank you to all of our Sutton Hoo volunteers!

Same here, Carl. It was also a great idea to have them all on-site together, giving Patrons a chance to meet & greet. Like-minded people... friends for life.

Patricia Amero

I may not have been there in person but so glad that some of us from the Patreon community were able to attend and represent us.

Carl Johnson

So wished to be there with all of you! Really glad to see that there may be opportunities in the future!

Patrick Icardi

👋 Hi both!

Justin Freeman

A very good question. Now we've discovered how great it is to meet other Time Team fans and supporters - as well as the lovely Helen, Dani and Carenza - it would be a shame if we didn't do more.

A Bleese

It was fantastic meeting all those people who had spent 30 years watching Time Team and had finally got together. Perhaps we need to arrange something, a get together for as many Patreon supporters as possible. Just a day or two of talking Time Team. Obviously if some of the Time Team could be involved it would make it even more special. Anyway, I had a terrific time and anything else which could get some of us supporters together would be wonderful.

A Bleese

Got to think they were sick of the sight of us at the end...questions, questions...!

Noel Draper

And you mate, had a blast, if a little hot!

Noel Draper

You said exactly how it was to be there. Sharing that experience with all of you was unbelievable. Thank you all. Everyone working for time team and the national were so enthusiastic and happy to share their knowledge. The feeling of community amongst everyone made it a unforgettable experience. Thank you Time Team, the National Trust and all the volunteers. My Sutton Hoo archeology family. 😊

Orla Levy

What about the Sutton Hoo conscripts?

BEAUSABRE23

Ah yes. I've just seen what Martin Packer mentioned. Looked back at the photo and spotted two straight away on the flag.

Jamie Goodman

Before you do please have a human check the names. As I said, there were interesting characters on the yellow one. I doubt Patreons deliberately added characters such as "1/4". Some of these will be eg Norwegian names.

Martin Packer

I would like the next random name pick done live. How exciting. Finding out you haven't been selected simply by not hearing anything is miserable.

Dave Ludlam

Thanks Jason

Time Team

Thanks Nigel. We noticed the bond too - great to see so many like-minded people from across the world unite with a shared interest. Hopefully the first of many!

Time Team

The full conclusions from this year's dig will wait until after the excavation and post-ex analysis. In the meantime, we'll be sharing the Week 3 highlights, bringing all the action and dig news from this last week.

Time Team

We'll be releasing the searchable version of the 2024 Flag before the end of the dig, right here on Patreon.

Time Team

Thank you ALL..so nice for our continued interest and drive to continue knowledge for us, and the future people of the World.

Alan Drewry

Thank you from all of us on Patreon... you finely represented our community, and I for one appreciate hearing tidbits of your experience at Sutton Hoo.

Patricia Amero

Great to meet you, Noel.

A Bleese

Cheryl Kurucz

Yes the Red Lion is quite nice, as Nigel suggested. If you are also into Gin then the Angel at Woodbridge has one of the biggest Gin selections I have ever seen. We also once ate at the Unruly Pig. More fancier food than your usual pub grub but it was very nice.

Jamie Goodman

That was The Bull.

Noel Draper

The Bull in Woodbridge is good for beer and food.

Noel Draper

The Red Lion is rather nice, and I think is where the TT Team filmed a bit in earlier in the month.

Nigel Sadler

Hi all! As I wasn't one of the lucky selected few, I've decided to head over to Sutton Hoo for a few days next week. Does anyone have any suggestions about where to spend the evenings? Restaurants, Pub's etc?

Mikael Larsson

Question is: What to do now with our nice little community?

Martin Packer

Some Unicode-related issues with some of the names on the yellow banner... 😀

Martin Packer

100% agree. And tribes are hard to find.

Martin Packer

It was an unbelieveable experience to dig at such a prestigious site, with renowned archaeologists offering advice and answering a never ending stream of questions from us, whilst working at the coal face to excavate the main trench. Presumably TT will still have an association with the project over the next few years, with the NT, to allow even more volunteers to experience the thrill and enjoyment we have enjoyed this month.

Nick Butt

Thanks all. It was a fantastic opportunity and a great 3 days. I think quite a few volunteers were still down in River View Field when the team photo was taken.

Jon Leslie-Smith

I thought the same. There has been no announcement on it yet but it was there in the tent, along with the other years. Spent some time gorping at it trying to spot certain names but gave up 🤣 took a photo instead.

Jamie Goodman

Has an image of the 2024 flag been made available yet? Did I miss an announcement on that?

Richard Linley

Absolutely amazing - a dream come true and a chance to totally be with like minded souls! I will never forget the memories and people I met and chatted to. Thank you to the Time Team stars for their experience and friendliness, and thank you to all the volunteers who made the experience something special to treasure!

Victoria

Absolutely!! I agree, we found our tribe!

Victoria

Amazing! Enjoy! The weather is looking even better for next week! 😃

Jamie Goodman

Here here!!! A magical experience I will never forget, and one I aim to repeat, given the chance.

Louise Burdett

So well said Nigel, and I couldn't agree more! It was 3 days of TT bliss with like minded people. ❤

Lisa smith

THANK YOU - ALL!

Brett

It was an absolutely amazing experience, to meet like-minded individuals and share a love of archaeology and having the opportunity to bring what we have watched on screen over the years, to life, is something I'll never ever forget. Thank you Time Team, the National Trust, the FAS, and the Sutton Hoo Society!

Jason Mann

I loved to be there - sorry I had to turn you down - my hospital appointment got moved :(

Mark Vent

Cool I'm there Tuesday and Wednesday with thecNT volunteers

Under The Bodie

I bet some of it will have to wait until the final program is made. Can't have too many spoilers too early I imagine.

Fiona D

TT have thier final week there next week. Live show on Friday. Volunteers who booked via NT Sutton Hoo events page are also digging over that week. I presume the work will continue afterwards too. Plenty more to come, I feel.

Jamie Goodman

So wish I could have been amongst them!

Kerry Hennigan

I'm glad you enjoyed the visit, a pleasure seeing everybody who called into Tranmer House to see some of the finds processing.

A Bleese

A huge thank you to Time Team Digital and the National Trust for organising a wonderful three days for us volunteers. For me, the best bit wasn't the archaeology, although that was great, or the once in a lifetime privilege of digging at Sutton Hoo, or even being part of Time Team and meeting some of our heroes. No, something quite unexpected happened, which others commented on too. It was the finding of our tribe. The bringing together of a collective of people from all over the world, who all had one thing in common: a love or archaeology and Time Team. While our nearest and dearest might glaze over when we bang on about TT digs, this was an opportunity for us to express ourselves with like minded folk. Thank you Time Team!

Nigel Sadler

It was a warm one for you all out in that field yesterday. Saw you all working hard. Hope you and the team had fun.

Jamie Goodman

What happened to the recent ground scan where they thought they had found another boat? Was any of the area dug? Have there been many finds? If so, what? Hoping for a bit more actual dig news!

Lally

I’m happy to hear about more volunteer opportunities! Love the Time Team family!

Andrew Calderwood

Me too, I wish I was there. I was glad to read they may have volunteers in the future.

Lauren

I visited yesterday and walked round the test pits by the river and main site in garden field. Carenza was there with the volunteers. It was a joy to be able to stand with them and listen in on her explaining the finds, mainly at test pit 5. All working hard in the glorious weather yesterday and they were great to talk to, explaining the process. Those meticulously processing the finds in Tranmer House, I salute you. A very highly detailed task from start to finish. I also saw the 2024 TT flag in the tent and grabbed a couple of the special TT pin badges. Well worth it. Well done to you all.

Jamie Goodman

Well done, all volunteers. I'm so jealous! 😄

Leitchy

"Heat of the sun" certainly applied to Day 3. "Team 4" moved from Test Pit 4 to Test Pit 10 up the hill and gained some friends. 😊

Martin Packer

Will the Team still be there next week working??

Under The Bodie

me too

lizzy

So jealous

stuart sutcliffe

I wish I was there too.
